It's incredible that you guys on here would defend such scum. I've never seen any personal attacks that were so far from truth (at least by what they had to work with) and that bad made towards a victim(group of victims) that did NOTHING to draw them. Its not like rutgers went out there and brawled or got caught running a prostitution ring then he would at least of had a reason to make STILL INAPPROPRIATE and DEWOMANIZING ramarks.
Bottom line is songs are actually talking about hoes and bitches but imus was talking directly about a student basketball team and had no reason to call them hoes. Also, most of the rutgers players i saw had their hair pretty neat. For him to call them "nappy headed" when their hair was under control was completely out of line and racist.
That is why he has no business on the air and got his ass fired. gg cbs.

I disagree about the rappers only talking about actual hoes and bitches. I think the way many (but not all, and probably not most, but enough) use it is out of line and does hurt some peoples' perceptions of women.
Just take this for example: http://www.thewolfweb.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=471775
An utterly trivial and stupid song by any measure (i kinda like the beat though), but things like that have somehow evolved to become accepted. The trend should be thwarted and the includes calling a spade a spade, and the rappers' use of those words are often negative and unacceptable uses.

first of all at the start of that song he said he's a pimp so you immediately know he's dealing with prostitutes. then he talks about girls that see his car and money and want to talk to him (golddiggers) and how one girl wants to be on his team cuz he has a fast car. I MEAN THE NAME OF THE SONG IS I GOT THAT MOENY, GIRL.
the song is about hoes. hoes exist and calling known hoes hoes is not a problem. Calling student athletes is. 4/13/2007 2:40:38 AM |

Lots of songs about prostitutes and female dogs huh? The meanings of words change overtime. "Hos" is now commonly used to refer to girls that are easy, not literally prostitutes. I agree that women shouldn't be referred as either term (unless you're sure that's what they are), but claiming that rap only refers to actual hos is stupid.
I too can't tell if you're joking (if you are, bring the funny next time) so I responded as if you were serious.4/13/2007 9:05:00 AM |

so let me get this straight. so, if they are actually, in fact, hoes, its okay to refer to them in that derogatory manner.
ok. got it. i'll get back to you in like 4 days when that comes back to bite you in the ass

yeah man, the reason they can refer to them in such a derogatory manner and not get in trouble is that they are dealing with actual prostitutes.
had the rutgers women's basketball team actually been kind of scandalous in their off the court affairs, it would be okay to refer to them as hos.
And im pretty sure that after 40 minutes of basketball some of them had some pretty kinky and frizzy hair, so we should just drop the whole nappy-headed outrage. i mean, some of them probably did have nappy hair, so its okay
right?

i'm not saying it's ok, i'm saying it is absolutely not a big deal
do you know what would have been the absolute best way for that team to handle the situation?
reporter: "so how do you feel about don imus's remarks about you the other morning?"
team: "imus? oh the bigot, i mean whatever, that's his deal. i'm very proud of how we performed this year and all we've accomplished. i think we've proven a lot about ourselves."
reporter: "right, but don't you find it outrageous and offensive that imus said those things?"
team: "i guess but he has every right to say what he wants. doesn't hurt us any, they are just words." 4/13/2007 12:43:38 PM |

Yes, but nappy headed is a racial slur. Racial slurs are never ok.
"Ho" is a character slur and character slurs are fine because the person is chosing to have a certain character.

yes, a girl that follows a rapper around and gives "easy" services because he is a rapper or has a nice car is still an actual ho. A ho is a slut.
Its just like if somebody called oneil artest and jackson thugs it would have been acceptable (maybe not correct considering artests drink situation, but still at least somewhat warrented)4/13/2007 2:22:13 PM |

Sharpton: "First of all, what I said at a speech was, I talked about — you know, this was a forum. I’m glad you raised it because, give the whole context. This was a forum after we were dealing with this book that had come out saying we were innately inferior and that we could not compete, that there was something wrong with blacks. [Sharpton was apparently referring to 1994’s The Bell Curve: Intelligence and Class Structure in American Life, by Charles Murray and Richard J. Herrnstein.] And I said — first of all, I went through this whole thing about how we are not inferior and compared us to different stages in history. And many of the whites in the audience were standing up clapping because they were insulted that this guy — who was, by the way part of, at one point, the Reagan administration — came up with that theory that we were —"

^^^ I think you miss the point.
You plucked a quote from Sharpton out of context. Instead of showing that he was responding to a racist comment from another person with an ignorant comment, you just posted what Sharpton said.
So either you support the idea that blacks are innately inferior, you're a hypocrite, you're an idiot, or you're a racist in general, or all of them. 4/14/2007 3:14:11 AM |

Seriously? You really believe that? Have no one noticed that there are more than just black girls on the Rutger's Team?
Imus is an idiot, no qualms. But why is his statement seen as only pertaining to black people? If you can look at the team and clearly see diversity, and black people are the only ones offended, then does that mean that his statement about hair was true?

In Sharpton's defense, there are a lot of us out here who are tired of pretending that history begins with the Greeks. There were non-white peoples building empires thousands of years before the Greeks, but we're taught that basically the first great anything had to be Greek. 4/30/2007 9:48:35 AM |
