yeah FAFSA always fucks me. It always says like family contribution $14000 or something. I haven't even seen a fraction of that money. About the only thing my rents have paid for after my freshman year is health insurance, and cell phone bill 4/18/2007 11:05:58 AM |

I don't understand how they come up with EFC... if my parents actually gave what it said they would of been eating ramen every night and they live a very low key lifestyle anyway.
edit: and my parents gave my $0 when I was applying.

I'm glad I'm fortunate enough that my parents and grandparents had the foresight to set up a college and first home nest egg for me when I was born. Granted...the college egg hatched and ran out within the first year because of the out of state tuition vultures. 4/19/2007 9:06:47 AM |

When I head back for a Ph.D. in the fall, my wife will be heading back for an education degree. I'm funded, so no worries for me. I'm worried about her situation, though.
If we've both been working the past few years and making good money, is the EFC going to be based on last year's tax return, and thus say we need to pay out the ass before we get help? I'm pretty sure the government won't care that neither of us will be working and won't have much money, because we had money last year. 4/22/2007 1:04:26 PM |

^ yep, that's the same problem I had when I returned to NCSU. EFC was based on income of $36K/yr, even though I was only going to be making $10K/yr when I went back to school
what you need to do is contact the Financial Aid office and ask them to re-evaluate your EFC. they'll ask for a letter explaining your circumstances, payroll stubs, etc and can reduce your EFC to match your current income instead of last year's tax return 4/22/2007 2:51:50 PM |
J-Me1983 All American 2273 Posts user info edit post |
As far as the EFCs go -- If your EFC is greater than the cost of attendance, you have no need. That doesn't mean you can't get financial aid. Financial aid encompasses grants, scholarships and LOANS. If you have no need, you just don't get the need-based scholarships or grants. You can however get a student loan (if you haven't met the federal cap on funding).
Nonlogic - TGD is correct in his response. You would need to contact Michigan's Fin. Aid office and tell them your situation. The process is known as a Professional Judgement or Reconsideration for financial aid. They will see if they can reduce your EFC based on calculations for your projected 2007 income. So if you are still working up until you leave for school, that income will have to be calculated towards the EFC. They can't just get rid of it. But the EFC can potentially be cut by a significant amount. I don't know Michigan's processes for awarding funds, so you'd have to get all the details from them. 4/26/2007 6:41:14 PM |

Age doesn't have anything to do with the EFC calculation. If you are 24years old (Or born before Jan 1, 1984 for the 2007-2008 academic year) then you are independent from your parents. Therefore only your income matters. The EFC is totally an income/asset calculation. A person who is 45 can have a lower EFC than a person who is 25, if that 42yr old makes less money than the 25yr old.4/26/2007 6:44:34 PM |

Has it been disbursed to the cashier's office? Now that the semester has started, once they have it, you should get yours within two business days, and that's a safe, conservative guess. They're pretty good about sending out your money.5/28/2007 4:45:41 PM |

so evidently PLUS loans go through on tuesdays and thursdays, and we are supposed to get the refund disbursement within 2-3 business days of that. And if you get a PLUS loan for the summer, it will be split into 2 payments if you are signed up for SS I and II. 6/5/2007 2:47:01 PM |
