"Report: Johnson among those admitting marijuana useESPN.com news services

Three players widely regarded as top-10 picks in the upcoming NFL draft, including Georgia Tech wide receiver Calvin Johnson, have admitted to previously using marijuana, Pro Football Weekly reports.

Johnson, Clemson defensive end Gaines Adams and Louisville defensive tackle Amobi Okoye admitted using the drug, according to multiple sources who have watched the interviews, the publication reported.

The admissions were made during standard interviews at February's NFL scouting combine. The interviews are conducted with every player and shared by all 32 teams for review. None of the athletes tested positive for marijuana use in drug testing administered at the NFL combine.

Johnson is being considered by the Oakland Raiders for the first overall pick in the draft. Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey said he didn't think Johnson's reported use would affect his draft value.

"I doubt it will have any effect whatsoever," said Gailey, a former Dallas Cowboys head coach. "I think he's a great young man who probably did it one time to see what it was like and told the truth [when asked about it]. I don't think it's an issue with him."

While some teams could see marijuana use as troubling, others might view the players' admissions of prior use as a sign of maturity, particularly since players are encouraged to be honest in the interviews.

But the NFL's new player conduct policy, along with its hardline suspensions of the Cincinnati Bengals' Chris Henry for eight games and the Tennessee Titans' Adam "Pacman" Jones for an entire season, could cause teams to put even more emphasis on character, now that the league has made clear it will deal with off-the-field misbehavior harshly.

"[NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell] is going to be all over any team that drafts players with borderline character," an unidentified team official said, according to Pro Football Weekly. "You are not going to see a draft like, for instance, Cincinnati's [in 2006], where they took four criminals in one draft, because the owners are going to start getting fined."

Clemson coach Tommy Bowden talked about Adams on an ACC conference call Thursday.

"I hold him to the same esteem as President Clinton. He's in good company," Bowden said. "I'd be naive to think that most guys haven't tried it. He'd be the last guy I'd think. But I don't know if he inhaled."

I don't think it should matter at all, but it'll be interestig to see if any teams consider it a possible character issue...

I think its funny that its some big surprise to hear football players smoking the dope...if they fined all the players in the nfl that smoked the NFL could probably pay of the U.S's debt

i think theres a big difference in previously using it and using it now.

everyone makes mistakes, and i agree with this:

if anything, it shows smoking weed isn't that big of a deal.....only a big deal when other people make it a big deal.

yes, but if he keeps smoking weed like ricky williams, he'll be suspended. I don't want to invest a high draft pick in someone who's gonna get suspended.

I'd prefer my players to smoke pot as long as they didnt get busted for it

People high on marijuana don't shoot up nightclubs or get into fights in the projects

They shoot up motherfuckers on Halo and listen to Project Pat

yes happy 4/20 to all....

Pro atheletes are under a very critical radar and any recreational drug use is made into a big deal. Marijuana is a big part of our culture no matter how much you try to deny it and our athletes honesty about their usage is a start of us realizing that and accepting it.

I dont see why people care that you smoke if you still get your job done well. In this case, if calvin johnson smokes weed everyday and is the best WR in football: who cares? Its the people who let it ruin their life goals and motivation that need criticism, not the ones who can handle it.

^^^I don't care if they smoke weed. I care when they get caught, and get suspended. That pisses me off when your teammates are depending on you, and then you get suspended.

as long as it doesn't affect performance or attitude for or toward the team, why should it care?

if they, like most of the country, would realize its not a big deal, it wouldn't be an issue......that said, i agree.

Wow so guys answer the question HONESTLY and instead of encouraging future prospects to be HONEST in their interview they immediately report their names, question their character, hinder future endorsement deals, etc???

What a shitty thing to do. Unreal.

we want people to be honest instead of just giving the boring old company line of what they're supposed to say

then when they're honest we don't want to hear it (some people dont)

"Hey Calvin! Don't forget to bring a towel!"

Yeah this could turn into a debate over legalization of marijuana real easy, but the cold fact remains that it is illegal: thus the news hype. blah....

U wont see any team passing on a player because they admit to marijuana use. Teams dont give a shit about that, they want to fucking win and thats all....

Don't be naive.

Teams don't want their players violating the drug policy, which has claimed a lot of casualties over the last few years. Several players drop hard every year in the draft because of character issues, and a frequently cited character issue is prior drug use.
