Searched google and haven't found anything:

When I'm accessing multiple videos or files etc on Vista x64 or even installing software on my new computer the system seems to lock up temporarily and everything just stops for 10-30 seconds.

eVGA 680i mb
E6400
1gb pc533 ram (until my 4gb pc800 ram gets in)
sata hard drives

nothing overclocked
good temps
computer passes memtest and other stability tests
haven't checked power supply voltages, should i? (650watt sli certified antec psu)

latest nvidia drivers

anyone had this happen before? I remember this happening on a previous computer of mine when i tried vista x64 beta a long time ago, but just ended up going back to xp... dif. hardware now...

x64 should be more stable and slightly faster in performance..

the lag may be nforce drivers for the chipset? we all know nvidia is taking a shit with vista drivers.

i've read that there are more compatibility issues with the x64 Vista than with the x86, especially with nVidia related drivers. at this point there really is no advantage to using a 64bit OS when the majority of stuff is still written for 32bit. i have been running the x86 Vista Ultimate on my desktop computer, even though i can run the x64, because of compatibility and stability issues still.

i'm going to run acronis and backup the x64 then install x86 and see if there are the same issues. then if i have to i'll try xp. then if it continues it's a hardware/driver issue i'm sure.

x86 works better, but i can tell a major slowdown when using NVIDIA'S raid drivers vs. the default ones Vista installs, so I kept the default.

you know...i might have to go back to X86 Vista Ultimate also...I'm running x64 and i've experienced a lot of bluescreens and sometimes lag with copying files from one place to another....even if its on the same HDD. What i liked about x64 was photoshop's performance.
