My parents are coming to visit. Any suggestions for things to do in the Raleigh area? If your parents visited you at school, what did they enjoy?
When my brother visited, we rode motorcycles during the day and went drinking at night, but I don't think my parents will go for that. 4/24/2007 1:21:33 PM |

are your parents lame or fun? When my parents visited, we went out to dinner, toured campus, and had some drinks at some bars on hillsborough. Well, I was 21 at that point.

they'll probably really enjoy seeing the campus and areas that you frequently travel. thats probably the best thing.
other things to do with parents ... hmmm....
JC Raulston Arboretum. take the dog along too. Or if youd like a more significant urban hike, W.B. Umstead Park. i always let the dog run free there.
Greenshields brewery downtown raleigh... good food, good beer. or cheap dinner/beer/movie at Raleighwood Theater.
if you like museums, NC Museum of History is pretty cool, as is the science museum downtown. i dont know if that sounds like something you'd want to do tho.
live music? Berkeley Cafe is often a good bet.
...
damn, you know there really aint much to do in Raleigh.
i guess its one of the big reasons I moved. 4/24/2007 2:01:57 PM |

Mine like art museum, and the museums downtown (I like the science one). My parents like to shop so I've taken them to Cary to all the stores they don't have where they live (like Trader Joes, yay for cheep wine). Depends what your parents like to do. 4/24/2007 8:14:00 PM |

The Progress Energy Center
There is typically a lot of shows going on there (it has 4 different venues), and if you're lucky a broadway one may be in town. 4/24/2007 10:50:50 PM |

Depends on your parents....My dad will spend two hours at Agri-Supply over in Garner and not buy anything. I try to get them to end up to Crab tree at some point so we can eat at Cheese-Cake Factory and they buy.
Golf and bowling are pretty laid back atomspheres for most parents, its you call. 4/25/2007 12:41:10 AM |

Don't try to entertain, but take them to the places that you like. That way they get to know the person you are becoming. They are coming to see you, that is enough for them I am sure. 4/25/2007 12:16:59 PM |

I disagree with people on here a bit-- I think there is a TON of stuff to do in Raleigh, you just haven't gone looking for it.
Look up some of the local websites-- triangle events or something like that. There are music events all over, in fact some type of outdoor concert around here this weekend (sunday), there are wine tastings occasionally (pretty fun, actually), the art museumS, the capitol stuff, the glenwood south district, streets of southpoint mall, crabtree, northhills, that movie theatre (is it raleighwood where you get dinner & a movie??-- someone ref'd it above^), campus tours (whisper discs always a hit), fairgrounds (huuge flea market on weekends), market district (rum runners area).
Look up music venues for details on their concerts, there are many bands that dont play hardcore stuff that come around often. Try: berkeley, lincoln theatre, rum runners (dueling pianos), that jazz club near rum runners (forgot name), tir na nog, pour house, and a hundred more i cant remember.
BODIES exhibition is currently at southpoint, which is a pretty huge deal. Tix are like $30. There is also a pretty huge exhibit at the art museum, kings and tombs or something.
Cool hole-in-the-wall restauraunts are good to take parents to, but those you have to know of on your own.
Charlie Goodnight's comedy club-- and the other one-- more family-friendly from what I hear-- comedywerks or something.
Could always do something dumb like paddleboats at lake johnson, canoes even, or just walk around. (umstead was mentioned-- better for walking around IMO)
We have a couple INDY movie theatres around (colony, galaxy, and rialto) which show some crazy cool movies and I think they all sell beer.
I mean really. I could keep going. Just wait until you leave raleigh to some smaller less diverse town and try to do something on a friday night. 4/27/2007 5:01:36 PM |

Cooper's BBQ
downtown on davie st. look it up and hook it up
Also FIRST FRIDAYs [of the month] there is a big event where people go wine tasting and art-gallery-looking, and much if not all the wine is free or cheap. I've always wanted to go, but haven't gotten around to it.
I think Alive afer Five is starting up again, and thats (what, thursdays?) on Glenwood south this year... outdoor music, beer, lots of people.

Being that I lived in Sumter Square apartments, my ‘rents always wanted to go to Crossroads. There was a dsw where my mother could shoe shop, the greek fiesta was a fun place to eat, and there’s a nice theater there too. 4/27/2007 7:23:46 PM |
