http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=113586

sure to be dropping soon as every single team in the area got worse. 08 should be better than ever though.

you're wondering why philadelphia is a better sports city than raleigh-durham?

maybe because they have a franchise for each of the four major sports

and the big five

and bill cosby

stop making so many damn threads

lets move Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill up to 12th! you know, after duke had a down year, all 3 football programs sucked...the former stanley cup winners missed the playoffs...etc...wtf does RDU deserve to go UP for?

August 1, 2006

They had to put any of the places that won in the major sports higher than they were the previous year.

Chicago
Miami
Pittsburgh
Detroit

^^Charlotte is a great sports city. The Panthers and the Knights get support on a regular basis. The Bobcats, whether good or not (yet), have a wonderful new arena downtown. It's a great place to go see a game no matter which team.

if you're wondering about philly...

philadelphia fans are fucking nuts. even the flyers sold a ton of tickets this year and they were horrid. eagles are next to impossible to get seats (the panthers mnf game this year, i got the season tickets from a 35+ year holder), the phillies sell a ton of tickets, opening week was entirely sold out... it's calmed down a bit after the slide, but the current win streak will pull it back up.

hell, the phantoms probably pull more than the hurricanes late last season.

sell outs for AFL too.

the linc and citizens bank are both spanking new and in great shape, which doesnt hurt

The only reason Charlotte isn't higher is because the Bobcats and Panthers generally sucked this year.

Between those two franchises, the Knights, the Checkers, UNC-C, etc. it's a pretty good sports town.

I'm a little bit surprised they still let them group the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area together. If you keep them together, then RDU will always be top 20 just because the 3 of the Big 4 in college bball.

Well if you take the Panthers away from Charlotte (love em), it lacks quality bigtime. Who cares about AAA baseball, UNCC is a joke (conference hello?), and fuck the bobcats for many, many reasons that I wont get into. You could argue on behalf of charlotte with NASCAR, btu we all see where the NASCAR ratings are going. Im not surprised they didnt include it in the ratings else theyd have to include WWE and UFC fanmanship as well

And yes if you split up Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill then each by itself has rough time of it. Once NCSU gets into the bigtime college bball mix again with Sid then this area will erupt. Too bad Duke cant get their act together with football, I guess those snobs are too stuffy to enjoy tailgating...

The list shouldn't have anything to do with team success. Miami being anywhere near the Top 10 is a fucking disgrace.

The top sports cities in the country are inarguable and interchangable. They are New York City, Chicago, and Boston.

V The Marlins average like 8,000 a game and the Heat games are like the Dodgers. Late arriving and early leaving. Miami is not a top sports town. I think of sports towns as those who actually support their teams and they are almost religious (i.e.- the Cubs or the Yankees).

^Miami got on the list b/c of the Heat's recent success and the Marlins are actually (and very deceptively) one of the most "profitable" teams in baseball. Not to say they have outrageous support but we're talking profit. Also, you have NHL (panthers) and the Miami Hurrithugs and the Dolphins.

^^I forgot to mention NASCAR in Charlotte but yeah, that's its Thunder.

^^^agree; i lived in miami for 2 years, and it is probably the worst big city sports town in the country. No support for the Canes, they only sell out about 1 game a year, no support for the Heat until shaq came, and even then the arena still has black out drapes over 1/2 the upper deck. The marlins are just embarrassing, and so are the panthers. They have the orange bowl, and the super bowl once a decade, that is about the only redeeming factor for that city!

Then Juan Pablo Montoya comes out in his Lucha Libre mask and hits smoke with a chair. Subsequently, NASCAR officials rule that Montoya speeded on his way to the ring, and then they call a debris caution and declare Gordon the winner

embarassed about that particular move, sure. i mean, for comparison's sake, i was a little embarassed about state gettin rid of sendek only like 2 years removed from his ACC CoY, even though i felt it was the right move. that doesnt make ncsu an embarassment though.

Here come all the Charlotte haters out of the woodwork, as usual

The Panthers have gotten fantastic support over the years, despite Charlotte being the test (and first) NFL market to use a derivative of the PSL System, which systematically gouges fans even more than they are used to - they always sell out all regular season and preseason games, what else do you want?

The Panthers have been to 3 NFC title games and a super bowl in their first 11 years; i don't really see why anyone should be embarrassed about that

The Bobcats are doing just fine, considering the anti-pro-roundball angst that the Hornets fostered and left behind for the new guys to deal with... the new arena downtown was built using taxpayer money directly after the city collectively voted that down in referendum, a lot of people, including my folks are still enraged about that and the raised property taxes that came with it - it'll take a little more time - the team right now is constantly improving, and will have a real shot at the playoffs next year, the downtown arena is gorgeous

oh yeah, and NASCAR brings three bigtime race weekends per year, including the allstar race, into the city... not to mention the NASCAR Hall of Fame being built there as well

I love Raleigh and I love NC State, but it sounds like there's a lot of inferiority complex up in here

and i hope you're talking about the Florida Panthers

My guess is that the Triangle has more of a national reputation for being a sports 'town' than Charlotte does. Charlotte is the place where NASCAR is centered to most people, which is a big thing but IMO still pales in comparison to 'Tobacco Road.'

With the Canes championship, the constant shoving down the throat of Duke-UNC, and of course NC State right down the road, I imagine that overshadows the Panthers and the Bobcats.

yeah they were talking about the florida panthers, i misinterpreted him at first

i dont think RDU has an inferiority complex, i just think since college basketball is king in RDU, they act like NBA/NFL/NASCAR/UNCC/ECHL/IL is nothing which is obviously wrong

^^I agree with that, which is why RDU is rated 12th and charlotte is 25th. Nothing inferior about being ranked 13 spots higher.

OT: I am probably moving to #45 next year

haha, Charlotte pluggers taking the bait! I love it!

Charlotte is overall a great spot and I totally respect and love the panthers. But I cant help poking fun at that place to ppl who think its soo much better than anywhere else in NC. If ya cant take a little criticism of your artsy-fartsy metrosexual downtown yuppies who like to pretend that the city isnt really full of NASCAR/Wrastling loving necks and that the bobcats are a respectable enough franchise to replace the Hornets, then I will continue to get a kick outtof it !

yeah, the florida panthers are one of those teams that a lot of people forget exists

truth is, not many people outside of NHL cities (and not a huge number of people within) below the mason-dixon line give a damn about hockey at any level... this question is relative, obviously, but imo the Canes title will hold less water when asking most people their opinion on the subject

Charlotte has teams in two out of the three major sports leagues in this country, Raleigh (Durham and Chapel Hill) have zero. Seems to me that would put the Queen City above RDU, but I suppose the Duke-Carolina trump card holds plenty of weight, and it also shows how far collegiate sports have progressed in importance on the national sports scene, and how much professional sports (read: NBA and MLB) have soured in the minds of many

nice generalizations you've made there, also
