If I was in the market for something like that, I would consider these:
FX45 X5 Cayenne Range Rover Sport
In looks, FX45 is a killer. 4/27/2007 9:44:49 PM |

fx series interior quality is really shitty compared to the bmw, especially after about a year (go look at a lightly used one to see) I wouldn't have a range rover myself... not a ford fan the fx is fast, i've driven both the 35 and 45, both are pretty quick.
My dad and i went through this w/ my moms car, and we settled on the bmw. (and my dad always said he'd never ever own one) Besides, the maintenance being included is nice, I know mercedes doesn't do that anymore.

The RRS is really a BMW, with a supercharged Jag 4.2. Trust me the RRS and x5 are more alike than not, BMW Bought the Rover group and dumped tons of money into it, then realized they were losing their ass, so they developed the X5 and dumped rover off to ford. Ford isnt going to totally re-engineer any of BMWs work, it would be like Picasso retouching the Mona Lisa.
The problem with the RRS is its price tag compared to the v8 X5. Its a luxury thing, if your already own a 760 BMW and you want a truck, but diversity is your thing, you buy the RRS. If you just aspire to break into the luxury SUV market and you want to do it in a big way, but not spend too much both up front and on maintenance compared to the $75k plus you will pay for the RRS, you buy the v8 X5.
The Cayenne is in a totally different leauge in my opinion, and the fucking japanese FX shitbox can rot. Which it probably will, while you try to find it in a mall parking lot amidst 200 other nissans. 4/27/2007 10:05:05 PM |

1) Not necessarily. The base Cayenne is cheap and slow. When you say different league, you are talking about the S and Turbo models.
2) FX45 performs better than Cayenne S and X5 (according to various magazine tests). And its looks are the best in my opinion. So you hate it just because it is a Nissan, and not some exclusive brand?4/27/2007 10:10:57 PM |

Please tell me, WTF is the point of an X5. The 5 series wagon has more cargo capacity and can be had with AWD. Though I suppose that's changed with the redesigned '07?
If cost is no object I'd rock a Cayenne, but if it is then I'd try for a Toureg (same damn SUV anway). 4/29/2007 2:38:56 AM |

The BMW x3 and x5 are just as fucking stupid and worthless as the entire Range Rover line is now.
It's a shitbox with gold trim that doesn't do anything well, but people buy it because it "means you have money".

and BBR:
I completely agree with both of you, and that's exactly my point. How the HELL is a BMW X5 a hobby? And how in the world does it "make you happy"? All a luxury vehicle does is pump up your social penis so other people will think you have some kind of imaginary status. And if that is happiness, or a hobby, maybe I just missed the boat on that one.

Yea, I actually mean't to say Land Rover as a whole, but the RR has still held up it's end of the bargain. It's a shame that the most expensive model is the only one left that is off-road worthy. The final straw for me came a few years ago when a dealership owner told me he was almost ashamed to sell them anymore and that they had to stop having the Uwharrie festivals, because the new models couldn't make it through the trails.
Quote : | "i cant argue with people who drive saturns. on paper they make perfect sense. but god what a boring car." |
Couldn't agree more. That's why I drive the saturn to GO scuba diving, or sky diving, or hiking or whatever else. Who cares how much exciting it is to drive to the grocery store? Or how exciting it is to go 75mph on the highway on a road trip?
I mean, you might get your kicks for about the 45 seconds it takes to get up to speed, but for the next several hours, I'm getting the same experience for about 40 grand less.
I'm not downing on cars for recreation, hell I have a project car and soon to have a truck too.4/30/2007 9:51:40 AM |

i don't think the experience of climbing a mountain can be compared to dumping money into something that is constantly depreciating (99% of the time), no matter how much you like it4/30/2007 10:45:46 PM |

i'd say driving a fun vehicle is directly comparable to the feeling of climbing a mountain.
your point of a vehicle depreciating doesn't make any sense. exactly what appreciating asset are you gaining from climbing a mountain, etc.?

hobby=accumulation of knowledge about certain area that you consider enjoyable. whether you are dumping money into cars or dumping money into climbing gears it doesn't matter. it is relative and matter of preference. i would agree that buying cars without working on them by yourself is not a hobby, although car collecting is definitely a hobby. either way you turn it you are learning about that specific area.5/1/2007 5:47:31 PM |
