Right now, I'm getting to work with one of my idols, Steve Carell, on a movie [a remake of the 1960s TV show "Get Smart"].

I've loved the idea of Carell as Maxwell Smart ever since I first heard about it, but I'm still not sold on Hathaway as 99. The part needs someone just a tad more mature, though I don't have anyone better in mind. I'm hoping she can pull it off based on pure talent, but she's never given me the vibe that 99 has.
I'm glad to see The Rock on board...he's completely underrated as a comic actor. If you don't believe me, check out his SNL appearances, specifically playing off Tracy Morgan. 4/29/2007 4:56:10 AM |

From what I read about the remake, it could suck really hard. The setup is that Maxwell Smart is some kind of research assistant or some other geek who dreams of one day becoming a secret agent. Then, through a series of events, gets to fulfill his dream. The movie's about an awkward, self-doubting Maxwell adapting to the life of a secret agent.
That's not what the show was about at all.
The original Smart was clever, self-confident, albeit sometimes clumsy. The movie has Smart as some lab geek wannabe secret agent. Let's just say, I have my doubts. 4/30/2007 1:34:47 PM |

Michael Scott thinks he's funny, makes multiple references to being the funniest boss, he talks about being funny all the time and just kind of isn't. That's what makes the show funny.

The Plot
First, let's make one thing clear, this is an official script and it is not a joke script. I have had its authenticity confirmed by multiple sources who are in a position to know. Yes, the script has been updated and revised since the first copy I reviewed, but I have seen two more recent versions. The dated Bush jokes, the Ahnold jokes, USC jokes, and the names of the villains have been changed but, this is the same initial framework, the same characterization, the same interactions, and the same style. I am going to stick with the plot summary from the first version of the script I was given, as I promised not to reveal any of the details of the revised scripts in order to protect my sources. The names and a lot of the situations will change from the below, but the basic plot elements will be the same.
The movie opens with a review of the Cold War and then goes to 1975, where we see a fat 10-year old pretending to shoot his parents, whom he calls "Commies." His mother makes fun of him and tells him to stop playing at being a spy. Surprise, the fat little boy is Max! We then cut to present day where Max is fighting to free a kidnapped governor (Arnold Schwarzenegger) from video pirates. There are a bunch of Ahnold jokes and movie piracy jokes as Max viciously kills the pirates. After defeating the pirates, you find out it's a dream sequence.
Maxwell Smart is a 40-ish analyst for CONTROL. His idol is Agent 23, a handsome field agent who always wins. After failing to become an agent because he was grossly overweight, Max loses weight and scores well on the agent aptitude test but is turned down for being an agent because he's too valuable an analyst to go in the field. Max has been analyzing and reporting on KAOS' efforts to obtain nuclear weapons. The main villain is Kristic, who works for a shadowy KAOS leader. One day as he walks to work he bumps into a female jogger and they argue and immediately dislike each other (hey, can you guess who she'll end up being?). Right after that Max reports to work and finds that KAOS has raided CONTROL HQ and killed many agents. Max attempts to search for the attackers when he runs into the jogger, who in an amazing coincidence, is Agent 99 (admit it, you're shocked, shocked). While attacking headquarters, KAOS also broke into CONTROL's files and they now know the identity of every CONTROL agent. The Chief then is forced to put Max into the field, along with Agent 99, who just had plastic surgery and is unrecognizable to KAOS. The plastic surgery angle will also be used several times later in the movie in order to explain how someone as young-looking as Hathaway can be the experienced 99. You'll also note the similarities between this and Johnny English, which also featured a nerdy guy who has a dream sequence in the open and only becomes an agent when everyone else is eliminated.
While heading to Italy, Max gets dropped out of the plane without a parachute, screaming and panicking, and is rescued by 99. They end up in Italy, encounter some bad Italian/foreigner jokes and go in pursuit of Shtarker, who is smuggling the nuclear weapons for KAOS. 99 has to continually remind Max that he's an inexperienced analyst and that real spy work is not like the manual. There's also a really unfunny and tasteless urinal scene. They follow a suspect to a rock quarry and Max and 99 use a sewer tunnel to break into the main building. A scene with a rat in his pants could be funny with Carell's comedic abilities, although seeing Max's bare butt and hearing him joke about his ass are appalling ideas. After a firefight, they find Kristic and Max kills him. 99 berates Max for killing Kristic before they can question him, but they do find evidence that the nuclear weapons were sent to a bakery in Venice.
Siegfried then discusses with an unseen leader how to eliminate Smart, allowing another bad ass joke to take place. Max and 99 head to Venice in a Lamborghini. They arrive at the bakery, sneak into its hidden area, and meet Siegfried. There's a cute joke on the doors sequence from the TV show and a lame "would you believe?" as Max talks with Siegfried. There's a big fight, including one with a giant named Dalip, and Max blows up the bakery.
That night, Max and 99 celebrate their victory by having sex. Unfortunately, the next day it is revealed that the bakery was just a bakery and that there were no weapons or radioactive components there. This allows the writers to use some tired and outdated "weapons of mass destruction" jokes. 99 and the Chief become convinced Max is a double-agent and so he's sent to prison (thank God the "writers" refrained from any soap jokes). There are then some lame scenes with government officials that attempt to satirize the Department of Homeland Security, but they fall flat. KAOS threatens to sell 20 nuclear weapons to dictators unless the U.S. pays them two trillion dollars. In order to prove they're serious, KAOS will detonate one bomb in the U.S. that day.
While listening to Car Talk on NPR, Max discovers that the KAOS bomb is headed for Los Angeles (that'll save some money in production). Max breaks out of jail and convinces his nerdy analyst buddies at CONTROL HQ that he's not a double agent and they agree to help him. There then follows the only great scene in the movie, where they pay tribute to the original series with a great shoe phone bit.
Max heads to LA and convinces 99, 23, and the Chief that he's not a double agent. They then discover that the president is attending a football game at USC and realize that's where KAOS will detonate the bomb. No one can find a bomb and 23 accuses Max of still being a double-agent. However, Max turns the tables and accuses 23 of being a KAOS agent. In another amazing coincidence, Max then gets a shoe phone call that relates positive evidence that 23 is a KAOS agent. 23 pulls a gun on them and drags 99 with him as a shield and takes off in the CONTROL SUV. Max and the Chief steal a BMW and take off in pursuit while Siegfried is in a F-16 headed towards USC to drop the bomb. The pre-game festivities at USC start and the movie cuts between the car chase, the festivities, and the F-16. Max and the Chief then find a biplane used to haul advertising banners and with the Chief piloting and Max hanging on the sign, they pursue 23's SUV. Max drops off the banner and into the SUV, starting a fight with 23. There's a fight between 86, 99 and 23 and Max accuses 23 of being a KAOS agent.. 23 is knocked unconscious, Max and 99 disarm the bomb, and it lands harmlessly on the football field. Siegfried's F-16 is then destroyed by the other F-16s. The SUV is still moving and 23 awakens and tries to battle Max again as the SUV heads towards a raised drawbridge (there are so many of them in LA). Max hits 23 in the eye and he and 99 get out of the SUV just before it goes over the edge of the bridge.
The next day, Max, 99 and the Chief then sum up everything in the Chief's office. Max receives a permanent agent's badge from the Chief and a puppy from 99 (that will eventually become the inept Fang), along with an offer to live with her. They then use Max's new badge to exit CONTROL through the famous doors. Both of them run into the doors and the movie ends. " | http://www.wouldyoubelieve.com/movie.html5/3/2007 12:45:15 PM |

I'm not sure that Gadget is based on Maxwell Smart so much as Don Adams only did one character. Granted, he was absolutely fucking incredible at that character, but Smart/Gadget/Tennessee Tuxedo are all pretty much the same act. 7/16/2007 4:02:48 AM |

but to back up my point, voicing a cartoon character limits ones' mark on that character, whereas a live action show lends itself to the characters and allows the actors to make the characters their own
like he can't use hand motions, eyebrow motions etc.. at some point a writer had to instruct the cartoon character and the voice is just the voice
just my opinion, like I said I am a fan of both and will be seeing this movie
the guy in odd positions always telling them both their assignments....
guess how many episodes of inspector gadget there were........86

[Edited on July 16, 2007 at 4:58 AM. Reason : 86] Quote : | "And, just who is this Inspector Gadget? Having watched, and enjoyed, the series, my best assessment is that Inspector Gadget is a combination of well-known detectives and law enforcement characters from literature, film and television. Inspector Gadget is Sherlock Holmes, James Bond, Napoleon Solo, Steve Austin, James West, Inspector Clouseau and Maxwell Smart all rolled into one. You can't help believing that he is an animated Agent 86 from Get Smart because his voice was provided by Don Adams. Don also provided the voice for Tennessee Tuxedo, but somehow when you hear his voice you don't say, "Hey, isn't that the guy who did the voice of that penguin?" No, you say, isn't that Maxwell Smart?
So, imagine if you will, an animated Maxwell Smart, who also answers to a Chief (Quimby in this case). Instead of the beautiful Agent 99 and a lethargic canine companion, Gadget relies heavily on his young niece Penny (who happens to have a high tech talking computer book) and a talking dog named, Brain. But, unlike Max's dog Fang, it's Brain's responsibility to follow Gadget and make sure he doesn't get hurt. I'd like to see Lassie do that! And, like James Bond, Inspector Gadget also has an arch enemy—the evil Dr. Claw. We never fully see Claw, but we do see his metal gloves, spiked bracelet and gold ring with the MAD logo on it. " |
that's just some guy, but it makes sense

In the second picture that pocketdeuces posted (the one with the 'cone of silence' i think) I swear it looks like Carell from behind.
As for the whole Michael Scott thing, he does try to be funny at times, but his funniest moments are when he's serious. Besides, Carell isn't necessarily going to treat the two characters the same way. 7/16/2007 11:20:40 AM |
