I agree that it is a great sport and that it is annoying when the players fake injury, although they do get hurt sometimes. American's don't like soccer because they have short attention spans and need play to stop after a few seconds, or minutes. 4/30/2007 11:40:33 PM |

americans like action, they just get bored with soccer, I mean how many attempts on goal are there in a normal game, I mean hell even with baseball (3rd most boring sport in the world) one pitch can change the whole game 4/30/2007 11:43:06 PM |

once you watch European soccer (Champions League, Premiership, Liga Primera, et cetera) you can never go back to anything else
On the international scene, the Spaniards, Portuguese, and Latinos of all sorts are the absolute worst about diving, it's pretty infuriating... although it's not rewarded as much as it used to be
that's one of the thousands of reasons never to watch Mexican League soccer 4/30/2007 11:55:43 PM |

it's not something I really enjoy to watch as I want to see more shots on goal, or scoring chances over a span of 90 minutes. However, it's a hell of a lot of fun to see how much the rest of the free world gets into it; not only do you get a sporting event, but you get a concert performed by 60,000+ 5/1/2007 7:58:36 AM |

I can't stand diving. Fortunately it doesn't happen at many levels below college, and even then rarely. However, I do remember a camp I was at one year where they had a collegiate girls team come to show us some strategy and moves, and their star forward showed us how you trip yourself when you have an almost breakaway to earn a penalty kick. To this day I still know how to do that move, although I wouldn't ever actually use it. She said she had earned several PK opportunities off of that play.
The reason diving happens is because it is rewarded and the penalties aren't high enough. If instant replay for match review was allowed and anyone caught diving was suspended from the next match, it would stop, but the leagues aren't willing to do that.
Soccer as a sport becomes much more impressive if you have played it before at a high level of competition, which I don't think is the case for most people.
For my money, if you want to watch the best soccer in the world, you'll watch the Premiership. They play a tough, hard-nosed style that rewards effort, aggressiveness, and teamwork, as opposed to the Italian and Spanish leagues which have a tendency to be more delicate and individual. 5/1/2007 12:16:48 PM |

I'd have to search forever to find the mag, but there was once a quote from a forward that had been playing in Italy and came to the EPL that was something along the lines of: "It's much harder to play on the ball here. In Italy, they'll give you the time and space to turn, but here, they're on you before you can even think."
I'll never forget watching the opening of that Man U-Milan match, and Ronaldo was running up the flank around 40 yards out, and Nesta was playing five yards off him, retreating in a defensive stance. I'm for United, but even I was screaming, "STEP UP ON HIM, YOU DOLT!" 5/1/2007 12:25:11 PM |

Dives in soccer at much worse than flops in basketball b/c the soccer players act as if their leg was cut off.

Soccer needs instant replay worse than any other sport in the world. First it would kill diving (which should be minimum a yellow, and a red for an aggregious offense) and they could stop fucking up goal/no goal calls. The only time soccer players are ever honorable is on out of bounds calls. Thankfully, for whatever reason, they're self-policing on that. 5/1/2007 9:20:44 PM |

Yeah but these things happen so much in games that you'd have to actually stop play (which is of course something that doesn't happen in soccer) to check every 10 minutes. A minute check every ten minutes adds up to about 5 minutes of stoppage time per half by itself. 5/1/2007 11:11:41 PM |

Interesting....what makes soccer gay? The diving thing is outrageous, and no one is disagreeing with that, but I think if you had nearly 80 thousand square feet of space to cover and only 11 guys to do it, you might rethink that. This isn't basketball, where it's 90 feet from one goal to the other. Every man on that field is responsible for about ten thousand square feet of real estate, albeit not entirely without help.
From far away to the untrained eye it may look like like people are just dancing around, but I can guarantee you it's not. There is more physical contact in soccer than in baseball or basketball, and no one says anything about those sports. I saw Iker Casillas, the star Spanish goalkeeper, slide to stop a shot, and his opponent slid feet first, boots up right into him and caught him flush in the face with the bottom of his cleats with his leg fully extended, and the ref didn't even call a foul. A few years ago in the 94 World Cup, Brazil's Leonardo elbowed Tab Ramos in the head so hard he knocked him unconscious. 5/2/2007 9:42:17 AM |

I dunno...you may or may not be right with that claim..in baseball there isnt a lot of contact but there can be some pretty nasty collisions at homeplate...in basketball you certainly have some hard fouls...in soccer you have a bunch of flopping nancies5/2/2007 11:09:55 AM |
