^ and I think I'm hinting some sarcasm there...

So you're telling me the market does not choose good journalism? Does it choose good vehicles? There's a reason The Big 3's sales have dropped. Because the market chooses good vehicles.

In a free society with a free press, the market chooses.

I honestly dont think that those shows have the highest ratings because the psycho contingency of the right has the largest support. People who watch Bill Orly and take him seriously are pretty much brainwashed and dont have a clue what is going on; they just watch Orly with a zealous passion, that is their life.

Ok, and that contributes to the ratings and the market is behaving as people desire certain shows.

I mean, I can make the claim that Japanese car owners are only brainwashed into buying those vehicles... or you can rationally say that Japanese cars are more reliable and have better engineering than American cars.

Sure some people may like American cars better, but that is their rational choice.

So you're saying that years and years and years of economic thought suddenly disappears when it comes to.... the o'reilly factor...

People enjoy watching O'Reilly more than Olbermann and just because O'Reilly does not share your point of view does not mean his listeners are brainwashed... that is perhaps the weakest argument I have ever heard.

I'm not defending him. I hate O'Reilly myself and I'm a staunch conservative. But I understand where he fits in. I understand why he has appeal: namely, he's 180 degrees different from olbermann, larry king, williams, brokaw, rather, couric, and the rest of them. If you want to understand why his ratings are higher, then look no further than the fact that the media is divided between the right (FNC) and the left (ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC). The ratings for the left are split between 5 major networks whereas conservatives get their voice in one.

And the shows on FNC are much more watchable than the drivel produced out of the others. I hate O'Reilly, but I admit I watch him. His show can be very good.

While I haven't looked very closely into how this research was conducted, this study http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reporters_without_borders claims that the United States ranks 53 amongst other countries in regard to freedom of the press.

Apparently, the study has been disputed, but I'm somewhat interested in knowing what caused the US to drop so drastically after 2004.

Anyone have info about this study? how it was conducted or how valid it may be?

GOP Debates <...> talking head commentary on teh GOP Debates.

what the fuck ever.

my point still stands:

namely, that you're just another partisan neo-con hack if you think it means anything that republicans are tuning into Fox News.

the only thing it means is that half of them are tuning elsewhere.

sorry if i dont feel this is significant at all to research numbers any further.

Well, I think Oeuvre has revealed at least a couple of things with this post:

1. Several of you are so ill-informed that you didn't even know what channel the GOP debates were being broadcast on.

2. The same abovementioned people are so close-minded that they didn't bother to watch the Republican candidates debate one another.

I don't agree with many positions held by the Democrat candidates for president, but I watched their recent debate in its entirety. It's simply a matter of being informed and many of you are not. Most of you don't even know what a fucking "neo-con" (sic) is--otherwise you would know that is doesn't apply to a number of us here. In addition, one of the main things that's hackneyed around here is the incessant use by some of the words "neocon" and "hack."

Cable stations have a much smaller audience because not everyone has cable.

Everyone knows that.

^ with the anticipation of SW ep. I, yes, I can see how market forces made it the #1 movie of that year. That in no way destroys market theory and what it does.

^^ same with that.

"good movie" and "good music" are a matter of taste. Just because the examples are not yours does not mean that everyone else is wrong.

^^ Yes, my judgment for "best of a profession" is what most people choose. This is arbitrary just as your judgment for best band or movie is arbitrary.

Therefore you cannot use your own personal view of what is best as a method to debunk the market.

i hope you're not really this stupid.

you see let me put it this way, the best of a certain profession and the one people choose to see can be very different.

for example, they have awards for best movies at the end of the year, its called the oscars
from what i understand star wars would not have gotten an award if it was the only movie produced that year.
they would have just canceled the show.
but it was the top grossing movie of the year which painfully demonstrates that the massed are after a particular thing which may or may not be the ideal practice of that profession.

Oh please.

i didn't bother watching the GOP candidate debate each other, because i dont give a damn about watching them hash out the finer points of their same-old-bullshit on live TV.

(1) i already know the basic issues on which the major GOP candidates are staking their claims.

(2) i'd rather stab my eyes out than watch them talk about it.

(3) it doesnt matter what the fuck i think about any of them, because I CAN'T VOTE FOR ANY OF THEM in their primaries, and so I have no say-so on how they sort out which one is going to represent the GOP.

when the race narrows down, then I'll have more time and interest in paying attention to what the GOP candidate is saying. Until then, I've got 20-some mainstream and independent news organizations watching and recording for me, in the unlikely event that one of them says something really stupid, like, "we'll have another 9/11 if y'all elect a democrat"

In any event, i'm not goign to pretend to be unbiased. if you think theres any way in hell I'll ever vote for a republican for national office, you're on drugs. I've seen what the Republicans have accomplished in the past 6 years. and when i contrast it with what the Democrats accomplished in the 8 years prior to that, it's a foregone conclusion. Im very biased in favor of prosperity, civil rights, and general peace.

FTR, I do support some Republicans at the local and state level. For instance, our County Prosecutor (King County), and our Secretary of State (Washington) are good guys, honest, capable, happen to be republicans, and i would vote for them over any Democratic challenger. I also really like our recently departed republican US Attorney for Western Washington, John McKay
