Judge orders shoplifters to wear 'I'm a thief' sign

Shoppers entering a Wal-Mart Supercenter in Alabama got a reminder not to try anything funny: Two shoplifters stood outside with signs reading "I am a thief, I stole from Wal-Mart."
Attalla City Judge Kenneth Robertson Jr. ordered the two people to wear the signs for four hours each during two successive Saturdays.

"The only comments we've heard so far have been positive," said store manager Neil Hawkins. "Most of them thought it was a good thing."

One of the shoplifters, Lisa King Fithian, 46, wore the sign from 11am to 3pm to avoid a 60-day jail sentence. Another convicted shoplifter was at the store from 3pm to 7pm.

Fithian maintained her innocence. She said her conviction was based on a misunderstanding: She said she was taking a $7 item to the service desk because it would not scan.

Outside the store, she said people who saw her wearing the sandwich board commented that the punishment was "cruel."

Hawkins noted how embarrassing it would be for the public to see someone who got caught shoplifting. "Maybe they'll think twice about doing it," he said.

At one Air Force base I lived at there was a sign as you were exiting the base that said, "_ days since the last DUI" and whenever an airmen was pulled for a DUI he had to stand out by that sign for the day allowing everyone to see him.
I thought that was pretty cool

In highschool, a lot of walmart shoplifters got sent to a teen court I was part of.

The sad thing was, most of those kids actually had a lot of cash on them, and were just stealing to be a badass. It wasn't like they didn't have two pennies to rub together and stole a loaf of bread.

i think this punishment is the best idea ever. I do not see how it is cruel and better then spending 60 days in jail. If you do not want the embarrassment of wearing the sign then DON'T steal. I think we need more punishments like this instead of fines/probation. Kind of reminds me of putting petty criminals in the stocks back in the old days and have people throw moldy vegetables at you all day.

Yeah, because we would have needed about 10k in the town square. They're ineffective in terms of deterrence, but they do serve to warn the publice to avoid these fucktards and not to trust them.

Most people don't steal because they're poor, they steal because they're shitheads. Lazy, morally reprehnsible shitheads.

All real crimes, when you break them down to their most basic level, are theft in one form or another.

Actually, it's because I'm a Libertarian who believes very strongly in property rights. I almost couldn't care less about shoplifting's monetary costs (pretty minimal portion of our losses actually) it's more the moral laziness and lack of respect for others that shoplifting represents that bothers me.
