I am a financial broker based in Denver, CO., and I need some help regarding farm terminology-mainly equipment and heavy machinery. I will be handling financial services for a Colorado equipment auction (repos, lease returns, rental returns) in early June. I know absolutely nothing about farm equipment and the machinery involved-I kind of stumbled onto this account. I have looked for websites but am getting a little confused. Anyone know of websites that distinguish the different types of machines and attachments available to farmers in laymans terms? Basically, I need to know what the basic functions/uses are of specific equipment and the differences between two pieces, ie a skidsteer vs. a compact loader, etc. Any help is appreciated! 5/7/2007 11:48:51 AM |

I mean, is it farm equipment or is it construction equipment
completely different things
farm equipment- tractors, disc, cultivators, grain drills, bush hogs(finish cut/rough cut), sprayers, etc

It's both. It's a heavy machinery auction, but it has both commercial/construction and farm equipment. I have financed both before, but it was one piece of equipment at a time, so the research was easy. I will probably be receiving 50-100 applications for financing in the next two weeks just for this, plus my other accounts, so I want to at least pick up the basics so I can have a somewhat intelligent conversation if need be. 5/7/2007 12:08:37 PM |

Hence, my confusion when speaking with potential clients. I asked him what year it was, but I don't even know if they go by model year, I'm a farm noob. I just feel like a tard talking to these people.

don't you have a resource, like a project manager or a principal, that you can ask these sort of questions?
or did you inflate your skills to get this job, and now find yourself in over your head?
(PS i dont know a goddamn thing about farming, but i'd betcha $$ that the bottom is not a roller.)

I have done small business financing for about a year; we are a small company-2 owners and myself. I had an account where we financed a lease for a $30,000 tractor to an excavation company. The owner really liked me I guess and referred me to his friend who manages auctions. We hit it off, he asked me if we could provide financing for this upcoming auction. We had no idea it would bring in this much money and now I am pretty much are in over my head. The two owners are up to their eyeballs as well. I can't give these deals to anyone else because there is too much $$$ involved. I am used to one $50,000 deal per WEEK, just today I have received 3 apps. totaling $300,000. 5/7/2007 6:11:55 PM |

^^^ well, good for you (and your company) because thats the way you grow .... if you pull it off.
or you'll just be lookin for another job if you can't. will be a good learning experience either way.
what would I do? hmm. make a concise list of all (or most) questionable items with notes. take it down to a local ag equipment dealer and see if they'll help you out. or go to a local vocational college and talk to someone in the ag mech dept. or call up your third cousin twice removed who owns a farm in bumfuck alabama.
if you're really at a loss, you better to tell your bosses what your situation is, asap. dont gloss it over like you got it under control. because you need to get them on board in finding a solution.
probably the best bet will be to hire a freelance consultant to work with you for a day or two once you get your head around what the issues are.
i cant tell you how many projects ive seen or heard about go to shit, and after the fact everyone's like "Why didn't you hire a fucking consultant?" spend $1000 to save $50,000, or somehting like that.
