RALEIGH, N.C. -- "First in Flight" and the Wright Flyer are on the verge of disappearing from the North Carolina license plate.
The House today approved a bill that would create a contest open to all comers for new standard plates for vehicles registered in North Carolina. The state's top elected leaders would choose a winner from among three finalists.
Representative Margaret Dickson of Cumberland County is chief sponsor. She notes that the current Outer Banks-inspired scene dates from the early 1980s, and she says it's time for a design that captures the spirit of the state's future.
Dickson also pointed out that with millions of vehicles driving around with North Carolina tags, an eye-catching plate would be great free advertising. " |

I think she's been bought off by Ohio.
Personally, I think North Carolina already has some of the most interesting looking plates out there. It's easy on the eye, subtle, and yet unique to look at. We better not end up with a dull plate like Massachusetts, an eyesore like Missouri, or a gaudy one like the smiling sun Kentucky plate.
Besides, if a bi-plane is good enough for our quarter, why isn't it good enough for our plate?
I mean seriously, do you want your plate to look like this?!

What if we just painted tag numbers on the side of the car in huge print - you know, NASCAR style?

How about just "the Tar Heel State?" It's who we (including expatriates) are.
Personally my feeling is that the less boastful a state's license plate is, the more legitimacy it has. My favorite license plate (yes, I've looked at them all) is California's. It's nothing but the word "California" in a very well-chosen script above the numbers. You're in California. So is everyone else. 'nuff said.
When I see the full-color montages with stupid slogans I just think the license plate says -- "welcome to state X, we have stuff to do! Really!"
NC doesn't need that. 5/9/2007 2:55:01 AM |

we just got new license plates actually. they are just like the old ones, with the numbers being red rather than blue. i saw one today and they look pretty awesome. someone in the house might be pissed that they are nc state and not unc colors.

Quote : | "Mark down April 16 as a red-letter day for N.C. drivers.
For the first time in 25 years, North Carolina will have a new standard license plate design -- and the only change will be red lettering for the tag numbers.
The 1980s lettering of "North Carolina," the Wright brothers' plane and faint sea grass will remain as the background.
Any change is a big change for a state with the same license plate since 1982. North Carolina has had the same standard plate for longer than any other state except Delaware, which uses a 1962 design.
"It does go back," said Marge Howell, spokeswoman for N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles in Raleigh.
Most states rotate their tag designs every five to 15 years, including South Carolina, which is in the middle of a contest to choose a new license plate.
In North Carolina, some drivers have had the same plate on their cars for more than 20 years, Howell said.
Because older plates are getting worn and faded, the state allocated $1.2 million to distribute more than 600,000 new plates during the first year to replace plates that begin with letters A to H, Howell said.
Though many states use plate designs to present new, memorable snapshots of their states, North Carolina's change is purely a pragmatic one to ensure the old plates are taken out of circulation, Howell said.
Drivers may have already seen some of the new plates -- still made by prison inmates in the Carolinas. The N.C. DMV allowed some offices to issue the new plates after they ran out of the old ones." |

The old license plate used to say "First in Freedom" on account of our signing of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. They did away with that because of its dubious historical status, and because "First in Flight" is more progressive. I've hated that stupid airplane for years now, it was 12 seconds, less than 200' and the thing wasn't designed or built here.
Anyway, has anyone else seen the new license plates floating around with the "In God We Trust" across the top and the yellow ribbon on it? I haven't been close enough to one to see what is actually on that ribbon. 5/9/2007 6:22:05 AM |

no the red ones make the whole damn thing look like we all got DWIs or something. they look horrible.
NC's plates letters should be blue. As for the new motto I dunno. But I dont see why First in Flight is so bad. Guess we all do new change tho. I hope its something good and original.
