Lorenzo Ghiberti’s Renaissance masterpiece the gilded doors of the Florentine Baptistery, which Michaelangelo called "The Gates of Paradise" are on a short US tour this year. They have been fully restored, and for the first time in 500 years are coming to the United States. Once returned to Florence, the Gates of Paradise will be reassembled in their original framework and placed in a specially designed, hermetically sealed case in the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo—never to travel again.

I've been to Florence and seen them, but that was before they were restored, and who knows if I'll get back. I'm going to Atlanta for the 4th, so I'm gonna check it out. 5/14/2007 3:09:20 PM |
