Rock and roll was not fully fleshed out by 1969. Hence I contend the era prescribed in the thread title. 5/16/2007 12:56:43 AM |

there are plenty of good bands during that period but saying it was the most meaningful era in all of music is a bit of a stretch 5/16/2007 1:11:13 AM |

No matter which decade you single out people will find a reason to point out how it wasn't the most meaningful era. You'd have been better off just asking what the best album from that decade was, then we would have all been spared the dozen or so "nuh-uh" posts. 5/16/2007 7:40:09 AM |

Wyloch is right. What most people consider to be 60's music really came out in the early 70s... The great classic rock bands in history made there mark between 68 - 75... Dylan, Zep, Doors, The Who, the Stones, Marley, etc...early 70's...

that, sir is completely stupid and false. the others, maybe. but dylan became an icon before the sixties were even halfway through.

and i didn't know as many of the dates offhand for the doors. but i looked them up and jim morrison died in 1971 and they had their first #1 record in 1968.

Its just interesting to point out that it was released at the very end of the decade, and not in the US until the following decade. Its much more 80s in style and lyrics, even their music videos. Influential album for sure, but if there were an album to represent "70s rock", I personally dont think this one comes close.
Anyways, how come no one has mentioned these:
ACDC - Highway to Hell, Back in Black George Thorogood & The Destroyers - George Thorogood & The Destroyers, Move it on Over Jimmy Buffet - Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes Queen - A night at the opera 5/16/2007 1:29:44 PM |

By year with no repeat artists:
1970 - Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin III 1971 - Black Sabbath - Paranoid 1972 - The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street 1973 - Steely Dan - Countdown to Ecstacy 1974 - Lynyrd Skynyrd - Second Helping 1975 - Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run 1976 - Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak 1977 - Fleetwood Mac - Rumours 1978 - Devo - Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! 1979 - Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
I am going to go with Led Zeppelin IV for best of the 70s, I know I didn't list it above, but I preferred Paranoid to anything in 1970

There's no way that LZ III is better than Fun House.
I remember reading old issues of RS after the Roadrunner single was released, and one of them said that The Modern Lovers was going to change the world.
*sigh*
(I actually prefer the versions that are on The Berserkley Years.) 5/16/2007 5:30:27 PM |
