when are we going to figure out a way for a car to get like 100 mpg or some new technology that makes gas mileage skyrocket?

because they already have cars with gas mileage that high or near that high.

question is...

when will the US allow such cars to be imported. (turbo diesel FTW)

^^why dont they allow them?

seems like the US is all about energy conservation and shit now a days...i would think they'd welcome this and it would make current automakers want to copy them and would strengthen competition(therefore lowering prices)

^um no. the us is not about energy conservation. you have watched one too many phillips light bulb commercials and too many DVD's titled an inconvenient truth.

never seen that movie but i mean how is the US not about energy conservation and recycling and shit

i mean shit walmart recently started using some environmentally friendly plastic and did some other thing to cut down on energy use...they say since walmart is gonna do it the others will probably follow suit

i seriously dont understand how you can say the us isnt about energy conservation....if we are not there is not another country on earth that is

clearly you have never left the confines of the USA. Ever heard of Europe? Try that for real recycling and energy conservation. The usa is way behind on the list of planet friendly nations.

^^who's to say people haven't already figured out some shit like that, cars capable of much higher mpg. You know dam well someone could come out with that shit, an oil company would just offer a few million to buy them out and shut them up, and the company ends up making billions on us retards who never knew the better.

You're just hearing more publicity about conservation, doesnt mean all of the hundreds of millions of people in the US just gave up their trucks, poor air conditioning, and incandescent bulbs, etc. Everything has to sell itself, showing that a company just looks like its trying to be more efficient shows more than if it truly did i.e. advertising. Companies are on the right track, at least they've acknowledged the problem. Step 1...check.

Blah you might as well move this shit to the soap box cause this aint gonna be no quick question

they dont import a lot of them because the market for diesels in the us is pretty small

which is good because diesels pollute

^^^not a lot. a MB turbo diesel from the 80's hardly counts. German manufacturers practically have a turbo diesel model for all their cars.

surely someone would have put some plans on the net...surely if you know this happens someone else does....surely if a car company in the US had a 100 mpg car that looked decent they would make it(cause i got a feeling a lot of people would buy it)

You need to read up on modern diesels.

A lot of the mpg friendly cars wouldn't pass US crash safety ratings probably. Plus efficient cars are smaller, and most Americans can't fit in small cars nowadays.

avon is banking on buying on of these.. he commutes 120 miles per day and this thing would defiantly help his pocket... considering his jetta getts 55mpg this is almost double.

we are all running ultra low sulfur now... that w/ new engines put emissions at gas vehicle levels... about 80% in big diesels plus most diesel cars are using a fraction of the amount of fuel their gas brethren would use so i think we NEED the diesel cars that greener than thou europeans drive

Explain to me why volkswagen's tdi series over the last few years got canned by states in US?

I would consider them a modern producer of diesel engines.

Oh yeah thats right, they dont meet emissions requirements. I've read about the exhaust filtering, and even the chemicals used. I havnt personally been to any dealership and seen it. Similiar to numbers run on lithium ion based hybrids.

he's real serious i don't think it'd would be that unsafe it's to be 30x safer than a bike because its has rollcage and airbags and etc... not for sale yet, it's like a redesigned carver and looks like it'd be fun as hell to drive

Every car comes with compromises. Can we make a 100MPG car, sure, its easy, but you lose something in the process. Eurpoean cars aren't as crashworthy as ours are. They are FUGLY (disagree all you want but i've yet to see a sexy super efficient car tesla aside). They also tend to be EXPENSIVE. I was talking to an Irishman and he was telling me how cars with engines bigger than 1.5 liters were unaffordable for anybody under 25. Now if you don't mind mashing the gas and waiting 15-20 seconds to hit 60mph then its easy to make an efficient car, but there are always tradeoffs. Diesel is something that definitely needs more press. I like alot of eurodiesels if only they didn't look like something i should squash. One final note, even the BEST of eurocars dont get 100MPG mixed driving. Dont kid yourself. Closest you would get is the smart and thats in the low 70's if you drive like a grandma on the highway at 55.

go to any country that has a lot of diesel cars and then look at the black soot on every building around and blow some black boogers out of your nose and then be glad we all drive fuel hungry gas cars

LOL

First, there are plenty of fuel efficient cars that are sexy. Audi turbo diesels for one.

Second, european cars are MORE crash worthy than American cars. You do know that Volvo, MB, BMW, etc etc...are European right?

You don't need to have a hybrid ugly POS to be fuel efficient.

Diesel cars look no different from the exterior apart from the badging from their non-diesel counter parts.

You just named all the HIGH end european car manufacturers.

You neglected to name the 20 some odd others from China, Korea, Eastern Europe and Western Europe.

There are FAR more death box econo cars on the road in Europe than there are MB's, BMW's, Volvo's, Audi's et al.

And like it or not, diesel is not an environmentally friendly alternative. It's BETTER than gas in some ways and worse in others.

The only real solutions are going to come with the advent of a commercially viable all electric. Once you can move to a grid powered vehicle, we can really make some changes to environmental impact.

there are tons of BMW, MB, Audi's, Volvos in europe. Not the same ones they sell here...we only seem to get the high end models. There are also Peugots, Citron, Fiat, to name a few non-high end cars that are decent enough.

^plus we are trying to make a point. He is saying European cars aren't crash worthy. Well the manufacturers we get in the US that are european, are far more crash worthy.

^^Full electric is nice, but range will be adequate to begin with, then ok, then not so good, and then the entire gigantic battery pack will need replacement. I'm not patting gm on the back here, but the concept I've seen that has the most likely shot IMO, is something like a chevy volt, especially if the charging-duties-only engine is a diesel. Diesels can avoid massive NOx output, they just neeed to be used at light load and be tiny displacement, not unlike how an electric car carrying a generator would work.

Emissions and fuel efficiency technology has increased greatly over the past 25 years, and that has allowed us to make cars that have similar gas mileage to the cars of yesteryear but with way more power (and options, partially because cars don't need to be so light to save fuel).

For instance, your average shitbox 20 years ago had what, 100 horsepower max? And hardly any options like power windows etc... these days we can get 30+ mpg without having to drive 90 horsepower slugs with no safety equipment or features. I mean look at Civics... high 30s in mpg today and i'm pretty sure it's been similar for the past 25 years, except now they have 1.8 liter motors and 140 base hp and are way less cramped.

It's not that the technology isn't there, it's just that we've applied it in such a way that cars can now be larger, more comfortable, and more powerful at the same level of fuel efficiency.

the diesel fuel we're running now is as clean as gas when coupled w/ the new line of engines. vw, benz, even ford are going to be releasing new cars next year with diesel motors that are have the same emmisions as their gas counterparts. even california is letting them in.

Quinn, see the post 5 levels up. Like I said, read up on diesels. The US just switched over to lower sulfur fuel. In the past it was higher sulfur and would not work with the more advanced diesels running in other parts of the world. Well low and behold now those more advanced engines are coming over here. Crazy shit I tell ya...

Actually no the econoboxes from the early 80s got high 40s to low 50s, much better than your average econobox today.
