I have Norton 360 on a CD.

it shows the autorun splash screen but when i click "Install norton 360", it disapears and doesn't do shit.

norton tech support says there's a virus.

all scans come up clean. I still get nothing.

2 different CD-Rom drives. It's not the CD.

consider yourself lucky that norton doesn't install. Its worse than a trojan once you try and uninstall it.

I'd boot in safe mode and use HouseCall to make sure you really are clean

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Norton also has a remove utility on their website if you've got bits and pieces of an old Norton install that's fucking up the new install

http://tinyurl.com/6oq8f

Then... stop trying to install Norton and use AVG or something else instead

NRT and housecall had already been run.

Repair fixed it. After repair, i tried the install and it finally offered me a new version of Windows Installer (3.1)

For some reason, it wasnt being picked up by windows update. I had checked and there were no new updates.

oh well. crisis averted.

It's not my machine, for the record.

As a technician, I'm frequently torn on what I recommend / what we sell and profit off of.

pay for what? one care? its like $30 for active spyware protection and active virus protection, along with other forms of protection, tune-ups, data back-up etc.

oh and this also includes 3 licenses.

I've actually seen reviews on the AV part of onecare that aren't that great.

yeah, i'm not too worried about it really. I don't really do anything virus worthy lol. But i do keep everything backed up. So a reinstall is nothing more than a format away. Another reason i like it is because its similar to trend micro in the sense that its not resource heavy.

roughly 5mb when you combine the firewall service process and the Windows Live OneCare service process.

Firewall 2,300K
OneCare 3200K
