My computer crashed and I've got Windows XP Pro SP 2 right now, and have just finished downloading all of the drivers. I've also installed the Google taskbar that I had pre-crash, but when I enter in a search term it doesn't pop up in a new window like it used to.

I had become addicted to this function and need to fix it right now.

Help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

i assume you mean Google Desktop.

how recently did you install it? if you have a brand new Windows install, and you just installed Google Desktop, it will take some time to re-index your drive.
Right click on the Google Desktop icon and to to Indexing > Index Status. It might not start indexing until you let your computer go idle for a while

I don't have the desktop, I have the bar next to the Address bar.

..... you must be confusing several things

the "bar next to the address bar" is generally, by default, just a browser search box. Are you in FireFox or IE?
You might have had Google Toolbar installed.

Sounds like Google Toolbar. Go to Settings (green button on your google toolbar), options-search box settings-drop down for new window
