I was going to stick around and have a cookout, but it appears most people are leaving town. Thought about driving down to NC but don't want to pay for gas. There are other factors, like something I'd like to do Saturday plus the traffic doesn't seem worth it.

Who is nixing plans based at least in part on gas prices?

Not many people--according to AAA:

Holiday drivers shrug at record gas prices
National average tops $3.11 a gallon to reach yet another all-time high, but AAA says rising prices won't slow driving for the Memorial Day weekend.

We're still going down to oak island like we do every year for memorial day, but this year we're taking my wife's Jetta TDI instead of the 4runner.

is that couple of bucks that the difference would have been going to break your vacation

The price isn't going to dissuade me on its own, but cost + heavy traffic + other things to get done around here are enough to dissuade me when summed up.

Also I would be driving at least 350 miles each way to get to where I was looking at, so that makes a bit of a difference.

I am going to be avoiding the beach just because I know most people are still going to drive their fat asses around in their 12mpg tanks and clog up the roads and beaches.

Normally I would go home this weekend for a big family cookout but I was just home last weekend for a wedding and I am not going anywhere this weekend especially with gas prices being so gay!

Joe's mom is taking us to the beach in her big van... So not too concerned about gas prices. Poor Mark!

Hey, I'm with you markgoal. Its not just the gas prices, and even though my Wife & I have a place down at Sunset Beach, the crowds + the traffic + the gas prices + my gas guzzler of a "family vehicle" + my sick daughter = not traveling down there this weekend.

We have a beach house...forget it, we'll go next weekend and at least only be dealing with the gas prices.

350 miles each way? If you get 20mpg that's only 35 gallons for the round trip. Even if gas prices are up a quarter per gallon, that's less than $10 difference. If you get decent gas mileage, it's even less of a difference.

Gas is cheap.

^ I get about 350 miles on a full tank, which costs me ~60-65 dollars to fill up completely right now. I would easily run through 1 & 1/2 tanks on a roundtrip from here (Durham) to Sunset Beach and back, taking into account driving down there, and sitting in traffic as well. Easily.

The issue is not so much that the Gas prices are outrageous (they are getting there), but I also need a more fuel efficient car. This Ford Explorer shit aint cuttin it. Especially my SOHC V6 4wd. This mudda fucka is TERRIBLE on gas.

Yours gets shitty mileage, mine averages about 16-17 in town and only costs about 50 to fill up.

"finds a record 38.3 million will be traveling 100 miles or more over the Memorial Day holiday, up 1.7 percent from a year ago. And most of those - 32.1 million - will be driving on their trip, despite the higher gas prices and a rise in hotel room rates found by the travel agency. Those driving will be up 1.8 percent.
"

This is why prices will remain high and probably go up even more in the next couple of days

skankinande, provided the statistics you have given us and assuming a gallon of gasoline is $3.10 and taking your high figure of $65 to fill up, you get an average of 16.666 miles per gallon, which is appalling. More so than that, it is satanic!!

We're going to the beach simply b/c my folks have a camper that we're staying in for free, but I won't deny that the gas prices will bother me.

Had we not had a free place to stay already, we'd probably just hang around here.

I drove down to Los Angeles (~800 miles round trip) and back this weekend and I'm going to Lake Tahoe (~230 round trip) this next weekend. Gas was 3.49 the cheapest when I filled up for regular.

I don't know, but I'm really not going to let gas prices dictate my life. I'll just buy one less expensive dinner every 2 weeks and make up for it..

V yeah, pretty much. It's not like I'm leading some lavish lifestyle while in grad school..

Yep I'll be kicking it old school in a camper this weekend down at the beach. Been doing it every since I was 12 or so I guess. What used to be just one trip a year to the beach turned into about four when we made the change from staying in a hotel to getting a camper. Don't get me wrong, I love staying in a hotel if I am with friends, but if its a family trip, I find that a campground is way more relaxing.

Gas is like $1 more a gallon. So your trip might cost say $60 more. If you are freaking out over $60 then you shouldn't be taking a trip, no matter what the cost of gas is.

Also you have to figure that many people (most that are traveling?) make their Memorial Day travel plans well in advance. Gas prices will obviously not keep them home, although they may go out to eat one time less. If people's plans are up in the air, gas prices combined with other factors may dissuade them from making the trip.
