I've been listening to 25 non-stop for the past few weeks. All in all, not a bad list.

pablo honey shouldn't be on there, and there are some clunker talking heads albums too.

Damn right---- although, even as my favorite band, I'm not sure I would give Pablo Honey a 5. It's better than people give it credit for, and definitely worth a 4 compared to most shit that comes out, but that's the only record they have made that's not deserving of a 5.

Read 'em and weep:

The Bends - 4 Stars, 5 in AG

OK Computer - 4 Stars, 5 in AG

Kid A - 4 Stars, 5 in AG

Amnesiac - 3.5 Stars, 4.5 in AG

Hail to the Thief - 4 Stars, 5 in AG

The unwillingness to give Radiohead a 5 Star review upon initial listen is so wildly out-of-touch and insane, I can't even comprehend it.

Get a grip, Rolling Stone, and give the artists their due, the first time around, when they deserve it. (By the way, Amnesiac kicks ass)."

they don't list pablo honey

Well, damn. I just assumed they would considering they listed "catalog". Weird. I mean, I didn't think they would list the Airbag: How am I Driving? EP, but thought for sure they included Pablo Honey.

Isn't that the one where the live recording quality was so bad that the band ended up re-dubbing the majority of it in the studio?

i agree with the majority of that list

the 2 star review for joanna newsom was even funnier after you read it, the guy called it an EP and it was obvious he hadn't even listened to it

I saw a slickdeal for $2.95 subscription to RS for a year, so I picked it up just to check it out. And I have to admit, whatever it was about RS that made it the magazine on the pulse of music and the culture back in the day is definitely gone. It feels like a slightly less annoying version of MTV with a lot of liberal propaganda sprinkled in for filler material.

why not?

something one person finds shitty, another may love

this includes 4.5/5 reviews

he can think whatever he wants: some random rating is just as subjective

removed any credibility.

this site is posting mostly that things that received high ratings already(and are often fairly widely considered good/great) should have received 5's, they aren't taking the movie little man and saying it should have won an oscar.

well I hate The Grateful Dead, including the album listed that's apparently "so good"

and I therefore really don't care that a bunch of hippies think it needs a 5 from some magazine

if he hates Radiohead that much, so be it

well The Grateful Dead are shitty to me

if he says Radiohead sucks, then he thinks they do

it says nothing about the quality of the band, which will ALWAYS BE SUBJECTIVE

there are not certain bands that are always better than others, or always good to everyone

maybe when you figure that out, you'll stop using Rolling Stone ratings as some indicator of quality

you're right, if houses of the holy didn't get a 4.5 from RS, i would say "fuck it, that album sucks"

my biggest problem was him stating his opinion as fact, but i guess i shouldn't pay attn to that, especially on the wolf web.
i guess his statement also seemed like a blanket one, deeming much of the list as shitty.

i'm done

I didn't say you would. I just think it's stupid to argue that Radiohead is good based on a subjective rating, that's all.

You should check out Paste Magazine. You may like it better (or, maybe not).

And, while I agree with StillFuschia that music is subjective, I believe that he was questioning the disdain the poster had for Radiohead and whether that had any merit beyond personal belief or flame post.

For example--- I fucking hate U2. I am, however, aware of their vast influence on many bands so I'm willing to give them their due. When you make a blanket statement like "Radiohead sucks", you're just setting yourself up for ridicule (and deservingly so). It's just ignorant in so many ways. Look how many of their records have debuted at #1, received critical acclaim and done so without much commerical help (eg. virtually zero video play on major channels). To me, that's an objective standard that just can't be denied, despite a personal/subjective taste.

Of course, even with my personal hate of U2, perhaps I only view them in a favorable light since Bono called Thom Yorke the "John Lennon of this generation". To each their own I guess...

Ever listened to American Beauty or Workingman's Dead?

The Dead reinvented themselves so many times, from blues to acid rock to folk to a more contemporary "modern rock" style, that I think it'd be difficult to hate their entire body of work. Even if you dislike their live style, the studio albums are tighter and display some great songwriting and musicianship. Garcia also put together some great bluegrass albums on the side.

As for the album in the list, I already pointed out that it shouldn't be there anyway...considering that it made the list for being "the best recording that has ever been done on the road" despite the fact that it actually wasn't recorded on the road.
