I go out of town and sleep in my car a lot. Is it safe, to idle the car with the air conditioner on for hours while inside of it (obviously the car won't be in an enclosed area like a garage)? Does it hurt the car? 5/29/2007 11:20:36 AM |

i'd be more worried about any leaks in your cabin allowing your exhaust fumes to creep in 5/29/2007 2:35:34 PM |

no it won't hurt the car, just wears out the oil a bit faster. i'd get it changed more often. 5/29/2007 6:14:28 PM |

Shouldn't hurt anything as long as your car is mechanically sound. I've heard of heads warping due to excessive idling although I believe they had other issues like low coolant that led to the warped heads. It's also a huge waste of gas. Also, it adds wear and tear on the engine. Generally, 1 hour of idle is roughly equivalent to 33 miles of wear and tear. With the factors of wasting gas and excessive wear and tear, I'd fork out a little extra cash for a room at the Motel 6. Not sure what they cost now, but they can't be more than the $30/night I used to pay for the lil' sluts. 5/29/2007 6:15:14 PM |

if it hurts your car or not, don't do it because of what goalielax said. If you even have slight leaks into the cabin, and if you sit still with the engine running for a long time (even when out in the open), you can get enough C02 to kill you. A high school friend of mine died a few years ago from sleeping in his car overnight in Greensboro in a parking lot. It was winter so he had the heat on instead of the A/C, but either way, fumes got into the cabin and he never woke up 5/29/2007 6:22:26 PM |
