K, yesterday at work this family showed up to go down the river. The woman was 45ish and was holding a stuffed "Scrat." I jokingly asked if it was going with us and she very seriously clutched it and replied "oh yes, he goes everywhere." I *sideways glanced* at the desk manager who continued "ok, so I need you guys to fill out these waivers and make sure you leave anything you don't want to get wet in the car." She made no indication she was leaving the scrat who's name was "Wilson" or something. "Don't worry, he loves the water and no, I'm not mental." I said "please don't take anything on the river that you can't afford to lose and you will need both hands to paddle." "No problem, I'm just going to tie him to me or something." She ended up stuffing it down the front of her PFD. After the trip she came up to me and told me what a good time she had and that Wilson had a great time too. There was a small part of me who desperately wanted to yardsale the boat and see what happened. Oh well, they left a good tip.

But to the OP... Yeah, she sounds mental. I'm guessing you are a whitewater rafting guide? And excuse my ignorance, but is yardsaleing the boat flipping it? I don't think I would have been able to resist catching a rock just the right way to knock her or everyone out... 5/31/2007 9:35:13 PM |

^^Yeah, "yardsaling" in most sports refers in one way or another to fucking up in dramatic fashion and strewing customers and gear all down the river.
I've never been able to do it intentionally for fear that someone could get hurt for cereal. You can flip boats with guides in them all day long, it's even an event in the annual Olympiad, but the ONE time you did it with civilians there'd no doubt be carnage. 5/31/2007 10:49:30 PM |

There is a couple who are regulars down here at Disneyworld who have a roll of towels that they use like a doll. They carry it around in a stroller and take it on the rides and stuff. They brought it into the princess dining a few weeks ago and we had to take pictures with it. When we asked what its name was they said "Towel-baby." She had lost about 5 children in 3 years and went nuts. I'm not sure about him... 5/31/2007 10:55:10 PM |

If for whatever reason I was carrying around a stuffed animal you bet I would personify the shit out of it. It's not that I'm crazy, which I might be, but it is expected for someone to refer to something out of place. If she walked in carying a live baby jacklope, would you seriously expect her pretend it wasn't there? 6/1/2007 11:27:49 AM |

^^^ that is someone being too damn picky and making up something to get their way. I've had people tell me they are allergic to certain things in a restaurant, and then I've overheard them telling their friends at the table 'thats the best way to make sure they get your order right'... its very annoying.
hahaha I just recently named the dingy for our sailboat 'scrat'. My dad asked why and I said because the damn thing is squirrelly and crazy out on the water. Then I had to explain who scrat was... and the whole thing was downhill from there.. oh well. 6/1/2007 11:56:59 AM |

It's not like a crazy person is going to say that they are crazy. The fact that they volunteer that information without being prompted should be a red flag.

I've never done this myself but it's probably more annoying getting your order screwed up enough times to where you feel like you need to lie about an allergy to get what you want.

I can see taking a gnome/stuffed animal around if you're traveling by yourself and want to take pictures of where you've been, but want them to be more interesting than just scenery. And the gnome/animal would kind of put the scenery in perspective... 6/1/2007 1:22:33 PM |

I'm not talking about a gnome gimmick for shits and giggles. This woman had a family, her mother-in-law was there, her husband and her 20 y.o. son. The woman was alert, responsive and aware of what was going on. I've dealt with customers with many manners of mental handicap... this in no way appeared to be one of those cases. She did not appear to be abnormal in any fashion other than the fact that she was carrying a stuffed animal and treating it as if it were a sentient being.6/1/2007 9:00:48 PM |

i took some classes at Wake Tech in the mid-90's. there was a guy there who on a daily basis,
wore a Burger King paper crown tied a purple blanket around his shoulders like a cape. carried a stuffed animal everywhere with him. kept a telephone handset from a regular old-school type house telephone, with the cord cut off
.
someone who had him in their philosophy class, said he would spend half each class period arguing with the instructor about trivial bullshit. the instructor apparently didnt have the balls to tell him to STFU, so that class period was a waste for everyone. the questions were stupid and appeared to be purposely asked to aggravate the entire class.
i would see him in the library sitting on a couch pretending to talk on the "phone". i could see that he was always looking around self consciously to see if he had an audience. it was like he was purposely trying to draw attention to his ridiculous behavior.
i really got the feeling that he was not mentally handicapped in any way. maybe some sort of personality disorder, but other than that he was aware of his behavior, and chose to do it on purpose just to annoy people.
i also heard that he was a resident of University Towers, and that the UT was trying to get him evicted because he freaked people out and (i think) on the grounds that he lost his student status at NCSU. apparently the guy wouldnt leave quietly, but was filing lawsuits against the UT for discrimination. it was like he was some sort of clever freak, just out to fuck with people
the description of the woman with Scrat sounds similar to this guy. 6/2/2007 3:10:40 AM |

I saw an obviously mentally handicapped young woman get an application at Aeropostale when I was shopping there today. It made me feel kinda sad knowing that she'll probably never work there. I mean I know what the laws are, but let's be serious. Everyone in there was in popped collars and flip flops and she was wearing plaid painted-on pants and slippers. 6/2/2007 2:50:49 PM |

theres this highly functional Downs guy who works at a local Starbucks around the corner from where I work.
he does all the general maintenance stuff, cleaning, stocking, what have you...
on the one hand i think its cool that hes found a place to be productive.
on the other hand he keeps trying to clean the island where you get cream and sugar and stuff, right at the busiest time of the morning, and invariably when i'm trying to get stuff for my drink.
I'm 'bout to get all like "wtf, get outta my way tard. cant you see im in a hurry?"

i wasn't talking about a gnome gimmick for shits and giggles either... there are a lot of mentally handicapped people who are alert, responsive, aware and who have families including children. not all mentally handicapped people bed-ridden vegetables. most mentally handicapped people look just like everybody else, it doesn't affect their physical appearance.
