That a large segment of the Mexican population believes that the southwest US is rightfully theirs and therefore that they are entitled to it. I heard this is true, and if you look at the protests last year where half of them were flying the Mexican flag, id say it is true. Also, it is a common known fact that La Raza holds this belief.

Polls have shown this to be the case, but I don't think the mexicans seriously believe it.
I would think it's kind of like the native americans who probably think the same way, but it's not like they would or could do anything about it.
America is probably the largest country on the planet though that has a predominantly non-aborginal population. 6/2/2007 2:52:34 AM |

What would this movement fight for? The main difference between mexicans and americans is language, culturally and religiously, we're pretty similar. It's like Quebec. There's people who want to separate, but there's no good reason to, and they don't really gain any traction. 6/2/2007 3:09:02 AM |

The existence of a so-called "separatist movement," in and of itself, is unimportant. Hell, the Scots have something along those lines to this day, but even the ringleaders of that movement have been known to say that they never actually want to acheive real independence.
Bitching about it brings them unity, and brings us very little negative impact. I say, let them have it.
If nothing else, this whole "Mexican flag" nonsense is irrelevant; it is a banner under which many of them can claim a heritage, nothing more. Rednecks waving Confederate flags (of whatever type) are not actually, seriously requesting the re-establishment of the Confederate States. They merely want recognition for a common heritage. The same goes for Hispanics -- they just want to be one cohesive unity, for a number of reasons.
Besides, all else aside, you can't reasonably expect that a transfer of formerly Mexican states to Mexico will ever occur in the next millennia. Believe it or not, Hispanics know this as well. 6/2/2007 4:13:55 AM |

They should be required to vote; and yes, I would say that. I must be too thick to see your point. We aren't talking about the people in this country (legal citizens) who are lazy sacks of pooh who don't do anything. The issue we are discussing is illegal immigration and the illegal invasion of another country into our own. 6/5/2007 10:21:19 PM |

I really do love this argument people have that boils down to, "It's wrong because it's illegal."
Sixty years ago you people would have been saying, "We're not talking about people who are just lazy, the issue we're discussing is illegal bathroom using and the illegal invasion of another race into bathrooms of our own."
And taxes? Please. THEY WOULD PAY TAXES IF WE LET THEM. An illegal worker can't pay income taxes without risking almost certain deportation. The xenophobic policy we currently follow punishes illegal immigrants FOR paying taxes and punishes the legal population for NOT paying taxes. 6/5/2007 11:48:39 PM |

i'm pretty certain they actually can do something like paying for taxes. there's some program for illegals to pay income taxes so as to build a case to support becoming legal residents. i don't know the details, but it exists, and some illegal immigrants do it. it certainly isn't a large portion of immigrants but it's unclear how much of that is due to fear of deportation, ignorance of the program or what.

Well immigration is one of my pet issues and this is the first I've ever heard of it, so I should think awareness is a problem. Besides, there's a difference between having the option to pay taxes and being punished for not doing so. 6/6/2007 12:05:49 AM |

It's hard to blame the illegals for not buying this. Half of the problems associated with them are in equal measure the fault of an American government who has given them every incentive to avoid interaction with its own agencies and necessary private institutions, and no incentive whatsoever to behave in the normal fashion.
The same thing happens when efforts are made to convince Hispanics that they can, say, go to doctors without fear of getting turned in. They say, "Oh yeah right, ese, suuuuuure they won't," and then won't go to a doctor until it's life threatening. Then they go to the ER, can't pay because the thing's gotten out of hand, and cost us money.
The only way to stop these things is to remove the constant threat of deportation for every illegal that shows his face.6/6/2007 1:24:43 PM |
