he used to be a potential #1/top-5 draft pick before his stock plummeted
combination of poor play/lack of games in may/personal situations led to the drop
the good thing about the MLB though is that there aren't set price groupings for each pick like in NFL and NBA. with a good agent, brackman could theoretically get picked 30 and ink a contract worth many millions more than the 10th pick. even with the falling stock andrew ought to get a good contract with the team that picks him up, and none of the the things that made his stock fall are lingering issues that would impede progress in the majors.
i don't follow baseball all that much, so by no means to i claim to be an expert or know a lot about it, but i think we've got a much better chance of brackman blowing up and making it big in the majors than we did with joey devine.
good luck to him. i hope he ends up with a good team (and if not, then i hope he goes to the orioles ) and a good contract.

Another team with a big checkbook, the Red Sox are hoping to find a first-round equivalent late in the supplemental round, and could be the team to take a shot at Andrew Brackman. A 6-foot-11 right-hander who has touched 99 mph, Brackman hasn't pitched since early May, after coming down with what has officially been termed as arm soreness; the rumor mill has stories involving everything from his needing Tommy John surgery to all those missed games being orchestrated by Boras (who else?) in order to drop him to a team that can afford him... like the Red Sox.
Pick: Andrew Brackman, RHP, North Carolina State" |
seems way too low though. guess we'll see soon enough

If Boras sat him out intentionally to drop him to a different team, I would have to question Brackman's character as it he would not be showing a commitment to his team. However, I don't believe he would sit out without actually being hurt. 6/7/2007 3:32:45 PM |

Well the old Yankees definitely didn't have a farm system but lately the Yankees are using their farm system to develop talent. Chien-Ming Wang and Hughes both came through the Yankees organization, as did Robinson Cano. I hate it for him because I can never cheer for him now, lets just hope he doesn't become another Joey Devine. 6/7/2007 10:13:08 PM |

yeah, but at least he got drafted.
and in the first round.
He has at the least a minor league career ahead of him, and doesn't have to go to Europe like he would have in basketball. 6/8/2007 12:42:23 PM |

Nope, just what I've been reading in a few sports articles. That's why I said, "from what I understand"

It's never a guarantee. He could be stuck in the minors for a while and/or get ruined by the Yankees. He could turn out to be awesome. Same thing could have happened in the NBA as well.6/8/2007 4:29:22 PM |
Thecycle23 All American 5913 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah, that's true -- nothing is ever guaranteed, but he's gonna sign a huge contract. That's one guarantee that comes with working with Scott Boras, and he always had a better shot at making MLB than the NBA.
I gotta say, I like his chances. As for the Yankees "ruining him"...no more so than anything team would. As long as he can get back to being healthy, there won't be any ruining.
Anyway, that's my opinion. 6/8/2007 5:36:27 PM |

there were actually a lot of NBA scouts that were pretty high on brackman after his freshmen season actually...
however, baseball is where the money is. Only 30 people a year get a guaranteed NBA salary, why not take the sure thing and stick to baseball?
Also a sport with better longevity and a better support system if you dont pan out immediately or ever 6/8/2007 7:43:07 PM |

i can see the argument for better longevity in baseball, but brackman is a pitcher. i think for that reason that he'd have more longevity in basketball than in baseball. but i agree with you on the contractual issues. baseball, is definitely more of a sure thing when it comes to the paychecks. 6/8/2007 9:17:43 PM |

Pitchers typically have better longevity than position players..... 6/8/2007 9:27:28 PM |
rallydurham Suspended 11317 Posts user info edit post |
^^ yes pitchers suffer numerous injuries throughout their career... but name another position in any of the 3 major sports that has better longevity than a baseball pitcher? Look how many 40+ starting pitchers there are out there still playing at a high level... and many relievers in their upper 30s still hanging onto jobs... pitching has a lot to do with location, control, and knowledge of the game/hitters tendecies... enough so that even if your skillset declines you can offset it. Hell, plenty of pitchers have had better seasons late in their careers than they did early and their primes are usually ~28-33.... guys like John smoltz and randy johnson went from struggling starters to dominant starters relatively late in their careers... even habitually injured guys like Kerry Wood keep collecting paychecks for over a decade
football: kickers obviously but they dont make a lot of money and they arent REALLY football players.... elite and solid QB's usually can last a long time particularly if they are willing to move into backup roles or bounce from team to team frequently(jeff garcia and brad johnson types)
basketball: PG's are typically the only position people can play at a high level past ~33-34 (rare exceptions)... washed up centers can hang onto roster spots for awhile like robert parrish, mutombo, etc but these guys are usually making the league minumum or damn close to it...
