black on gray/tan interior.
109k miles
3.9L v8 (claimed 252hp/261lbft when new, never dynoed), 5 spd auto (similar to jaguar s-type and thunderbird)
non-sport package (has the chrome bumper caps and 16x7 polished wheels, not lowered)
Sunroof, 6 disc CD changer, antenna in the rearview mirror mount.
It has worn the 2004 LSE front bumper (along with 2004's round fog lights and fender wells) and the grille that was supposed to go on the 2004 McLaren-Engineering-supercharged-LS (before Ford abandoned those plans) for the last 3.5 years. Those parts are now peeling and need to be repainted but the factory paint on the rest of the car looks pretty good apart from a few obvious scratches I won't deny.
Only one dent, right behind the fron passenger side door handle where gf threw the door really hard into the pointy corner of a huge planter at the awning at a hotel in asheville. I was so pissed. She had no idea what had happened and what the loud bang was or why I was cursing at her. I was relieved at the size of the dent, it's a little pretty symmetric little round thing in a not terribly obvious spot. Right when she did it, from the volume and abruptness of the sound of the door whacking the planter I wouldn't have been surprised if the door didn't latch after that. But it's fine. Thank god.
If it would encourage the sale, I can reinstall the original bumper and grille that have been sitting in a storage closet since 2004. You can keep both sets of grilles and bumpers and driving lights and fender wells.
has gone through the 80k mile frustrations (ball joints, brake pads/(rotors? need to check), coil packs)
Interior is nearly new except for drivers' left side cushion, which is a little weathered but still pretty good shape.
I've owned it since fall 2002, bought it from carmax with 35k miles on it. Most of the miles are from long highway rides 65-80 mph: raleigh to goldsboro every day for 8 months, Jan 2004-Aug 2004 alexandria, va to raleigh every other weekend for 10 months Aug 2005-June 2006
Cannot remember ever having driven it beyond 100 mph but probably did at least once.
Only driven beyond 90 mph a handful of times, usually when in a clot of speeders and just going with the flow. It's dangerously easy to cruise a little beyond 80. 55-65 mph is frustrating because at >70- 80 mph the car has a great ride and natural flow. Cruise control buttons and other steering wheel controls are very well placed and if I've got a good book on tape (arthur miller's Civil Procedure is one that comes to mind) in the changer I think I went a whole week without touching anything on the dash other than from the key. I remember it being at least a few days because I actually forgot where the AM/FM button was and had to look down and really LOOK for it, and it's in plain sight!
It does a cute little rev flare up to ~1200 rpm right when you turn it over if it's been sitting for more than a few hours, but I usually wait a few seconds for it to settle down to the real idle around 700-900 rpm before engaging gear, although I made it a habit mostly because it lessens the gear engagement lurch rather than any researched strategy to circulate oil or warm it up, etc... Pop Mech. and a gf who apparently mistook it for a bridal magazine (can't imagine any other reason she'd be looking through pop mech) and set me straight on that myth. I had to come clean that I really didn't know for a fact whether giving a few seconds before going anywhere made a difference in wear.
not wrx quick but pretty similar to an auto 540i (couple hundred pounds heavier) of the same mileage. Sounds GREAT when you stand on it. Traction control off button really does turn off the nannies. Anytime it rains and you feel comfortable with runoff room, kicking the tail out is extremely easy and fun and not at all intimidating. I've done it with 5 people in the car, and I am NO driftmaster. Come to think of it, that was probably the only time I've had 5 people in the car!
Only obvious complaint with driving is gear engagement lurch entering reverse from park or drive and entering drive from reverse. Has done it since I got it.
Suspension makes use of its travel on sharp impacts and the 2004 front bumper sits more than an inch lower than the original one, so tall/abrupt speedbumps really do require slowing down a lot.
Electric/ computer glitches occasionally happen and throw a "Check _____" warning in the status window and then miraculously disappear without a trace.
Oil changes were done at the dealership from 35-50k miles at recommended 5k intervals, I changed oil with Mobil 1 from 55k miles-90k miles (and new filters every other change) at 5 k intervals (having a garage of your own and a shiny new jack make these things possible), oil changes since 95 k miles have had full synthetic at Merchants for the 95k (@ glenwood x duraleigh) and 100k (here in W-S) and 105k changes.
back seat has totally gone to waste. it's the comfiest rear seat I've ever sat in but my butt is maybe one of 5 that has ever sat back there in the 5 years I've owned it. Drivers' seat adjustable to everyone, front passenger seat really much less comfortable for people with short torsos... so my gf tells me.
The backlighting on the stereo has been out from the time we bought it in 2002 before I even sat in it at the carmax dealership. Thought about complaining about it but it's never been a problem. The button arrangement is very easy to learn and I don't like to look down while driving anyway.
will post pix later, forgot I took them out of my gallery.
Man, it's tough to let go. Last week I was convinced it was time for a new car but after having run it through a touchless carwash last week (I don't have a driveway/faucet to use at my new spot in W-S so washing it has been less frequent), it really looks good. It's got that modest masculinity about it that so few cars have anymore. It's also one of the few sedans that have some hips and actually does flare a little in cross section. It's a sexy ride when it's shined up... I can understand why so many urban youths get confused and adorn it with extra chrome. 6/7/2007 2:37:08 AM |

I've been keeping a spreadsheet of cars that I think would be interesting replacements for it, but there isn't a one among them apart from a 540i manual with the m5-lookalike bodykit that manages the whole "man's v8 sedan" thing as well. Also, I never really thought of it as trim, but my car's weight is as much greater than a 335i than it is less than a 540i!
I'll have to start another thread for the diverse cars I'm considering. It's a weird mix. My dad is helping me out a lot, and he can't be talked out of the weight=safety misconception. But he doesn't actually check the numbers, he just infers from a car's length and width and feel about how much it weighs, so there are a few wildcards that can be slipped in. 6/7/2007 2:55:38 AM |

holy fucking shit man.... "et tu optmusprimer"; "you pretty black too, kettle, -pot"; I mean, I'm speechless... I don't see a single car among your pile of project cars that can drive anywhere near as nicely as my LS, and I'm trying to get rid of it..... oh I know, how about I try to find that $300 non-running volvo you couldn't get rid of for forever... that might be a worthy investment I suppose...6/9/2007 4:37:56 PM |

4-5 coil packs have been replaced, across two separate occasions, about 2k miles apart, @ ~82-5k miles. Been fine since. 6/9/2007 4:41:04 PM |

... and the fact you considered buying my volvo to use as the base for the "danmobile".
cmon guy, i got nothing against you, i was just breaking your balls about the spreadsheets, but the LS was a poor choice of car then and now. You know this, I mean you are trying to unload it after all. Hey, ncemt fag likes them- that should tell you something. If you want to attack me for something, why not bring up the Bonneville. It was a blacktastic boat that pretended to be a semi serious sports luxury sedan. Wait, that sounds familiar!
Ill admit when they came out I thought it was cool for Lincoln to be building manual transmission V8 RWD cars, but I forgot about them when I saw them in person, they were just so boring. 6/9/2007 7:25:00 PM |
danmangt40 All American 2349 Posts user info edit post |
ok. nevermind then... (they never did have both a manual and a v8 in the same car though. you could only get the manual with the v6 from 2000-2, but only offered the auto on either engine after 2002)
yeah, it was a great car, and I'm honestly thinking about replacing it with a newer one.
something like this one would be frickin sweet: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2004-LINCOLN-LS-LSE-NAVIGATION-HEAT-A-C-SEAT-NO-RESERVE_W0QQitemZ320122155254QQihZ011QQcategoryZ31850QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
