I saw no vampires either. Maybe they were the ones flying the planes? What is the premise behind the extinction of humans?

Vampire-like people in the book. It was some sort of disease, like the Zombies in 28 Days Later.

Mankind is wiped out by a bacteria from dookie. The dookie turns people into vampire-like things that can only come out at night to poop. Will Smith is special in that a) His poop don't stink and b) He can poop this non-stinky poop during the day.

So the "vampires" are terrorized by the Day-Pooper while they are trying to sleep much like in our world (of regular poop) where monsters of "legend" may stalk us while we sleep.
