Okay, this may sound like a stupid question, but Lowes and Home Depot have a less than 25% success rate in my experience. I've probably had 20-30 duplicate keys made in the past few years, and hardly any of them from Lowes or HD have worked at all. I went to Lowes again today (it's close to my work), got two copies made, and neither one works. Where else can I go? Why is it so hard to get a duplicate key made? 6/10/2007 2:07:41 AM |

the place in crabtree is good
most people at Lowes and HD don't know what they're doing when they operate the KCM, often using the wrong skeleton, and not putting the skeleton in all the way, which screws up the ridges. 6/10/2007 2:46:17 AM |

Ace has been doing ours since I was a young kid, and I've never heard of keys not working. Cause of that, I'll never go anywhere else. Thanks. 6/10/2007 2:49:55 AM |

Anywhere that doesn't have a fully automatic key maker. Lower and Home Depot are horrible, any kind of small hardware store ftw 6/10/2007 2:56:23 AM |

I got working copies from the KMart on Western before. I always hold the copy up next to the original to make sure ridges line up before I leave, whereever I go. I've caught some bad copies that way at different places, but never left the store and had the copy not work. 6/10/2007 4:52:24 AM |

You may want to examine the ridges on the original. I had a problem a few years ago where I had about 5 duplicates made and none of them worked. Turns out one of the ridges on the original had been bent, which wore down the tumblers inside the lock making the duplicates not line up properly.
If that's the case, a bench vise, pair of pliers, and about 2 minutes worth of careful bending will do the trick. 6/10/2007 9:15:03 AM |

I use to work at Lowes and used to cut keys. I don't know what they are doing that makes it so difficult. Cutting keys is easy with those machines. As long as you use the right blank and put the key in all the way I've never had a problem with them. 6/10/2007 2:36:17 PM |

Definately Ace Hardware. They even made copies of my car key.
Home Depot messed up my copy of my apartment, and I had to go back twice to have them do it again. 6/11/2007 12:42:07 PM |
