Just saw this as I was driving home,
Brown/tan medium to large dog, probably around fifty pounds, was hit on western in this area:
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=35.785339,-78.717964&spn=0.006118,0.010042&t=h&z=17&om=1
In the eastbound lanes, leftmost lane, just north of that apartment complex on western. It looked like a hit and run, and the dog was toast. If anybody knows somebody with a dog that looks kind of like a pitt in that area, give them a call. Somebody doesn't know what happened to their pet. 6/10/2007 3:25:08 PM |

I absolutely hate the way some people treat other people's pets. It is ridiculous. Maybe the dog got off of its chain, or possibly dug under its fence. Just because it was loose doesn't mean that someone didn't love it...
BTW: It is pretty damn sad to hit a dog on Western...you shouldn't be going that fast 6/10/2007 6:42:09 PM |

I think it's always going to be the owner's fault. You are responsible for taking enough precautions to prevent your pet from escaping, even if it means putting two bolts on your gate or building your fence higher. I've heard of too many bleeding heart tales about people who "didn't know how Spot could have possibly gotten out, etc. etc."
Animals don't know any better, and you should know by now that people drive like fucknuts. So that leaves YOU, the owner. 6/10/2007 6:46:44 PM |

There's a ton of black people with pit bulls in this area. I can only hope it was one of the ones used for fighting and thus put out of its misery. 6/10/2007 8:22:41 PM |

we were there right after it happened.... two cars were pulled over on the side of the road and another dog that looked similar to the one that was hit looked injured and was off to the side. we saw two people run from their cars to the injured looking dog... we pulled over to see if we could help but there wasn't anything we could do. i kinda figured someone would at least pull the poor dog out of the road :/ 6/10/2007 10:47:05 PM |

figure most people are probably going atleast 45, so unless the dog is just standing in the road then it would be hard to stop in time. Sure if they had seent it slightly before it ran out then they wouldn't be going full speed, but you don't have to be going that fast to do some damage.6/10/2007 10:55:20 PM |

An animal owner is responsible for keeping the animal safe, within reason, and within their power. There are people out there who think it's funny to be malicious to other people's pets.
While on vacation, I got a call from our petsitter. Somehow, my dog in the backyard had gotten some fried chicken, with bones in it. 1) we really don't eat fried chicken at all. B0j0s once in a while, and chicken tenders from there. 2) he was fenced in the backyard, while the trashcan is on the side of the house on the other side of the fence...as if there would have been chicken in the trashcan he could get to anyways
This was shortly after a neighbor came over and bitched about my bf's dog (inside dog) whining at the front door to be let in.
"your dog is bothering me" "maam, I'm petsitting, and I'm sorry" "hrrmmmph"
Not saying it was her, but someone thought it'd be cute/funny/whatever to give a dog chicken with bones in it. That's just short of putting a dish of antifreeze in their yard.
You do what you can, but you can't put your pet in, say, an enclosed, locked, shed to keep them safe from other people.

^ i agree, you can do everything within your power and still be at the mercy of fuckwits. However, I would think that most cases of loose animals are due to owner neglegince, rather than malicious actions of neighbors/foes. 6/11/2007 1:39:48 PM |

My mom had a dog a couple years ago and we were walking it in her yard on a leash. It broke loose and went running as fast as it could. My mom has a huge yard with lots of trees and thick woods right next to her property. He ran around the house and we chased him but it took us a few minutes to find him. He made it to the road and got hit before we could get to him. I admit it was our fault, but it would have been nice to have someone stop and apologize for hitting him. I'm not saying it's required or anything else, but knowing that someone cares is always nice. 6/14/2007 4:47:24 PM |

you people! Often it is not the driver's fault or the owner's.
in Tabby's story, she said the dog broke loose. How is that the owner's fault?

doesn't the term "road kill" apply to wildlife? this was someone's pet! Someone cared about this dog.
Quote : | "There's a ton of black people with pit bulls in this area." | not all pit bulls are used for fighting. And I'm sure the people who do it aren't all black.
