that case in FL where the 17 year old kid was sentenced 10 years for getting a blow job from a 15 year old girl...

the thing that gets me, is that even though the sentence has been thrown out, the kid has to STAY IN JAIL while that decision is being appealed...

Ok, the people appealing this should be shot in the leg or something. Are there really people who think he should have to serve 10 yrs for a blowjob?

Yes, the girl's parents.

FYI this kid should sue the fuck out of those parents and also sue the state.

cruel and unusual anyone?

^agreed cruel and unusual, but it wont work because of the way the law was written the DA was following the law...

i don't think the sentence should have been reduced to anything, i think it should have been entirely thrown out - it was consensual. Georgia needs to change its underage laws to what NC has - which I think are 16+ consensual is OK. If under 16, the age difference for consensual must be within 4 years.

Although 12 and 16 is a huge difference, 15 and 17 isn't.

I mean, 15 and 17, they could have been in the same class at that age.

They actually changed the law after he was sentenced, so it should have been thrown out then.

I saw on tv that the DA felt the sentence was justified because he felt the defendent was guilty of the rape charge on the 17 year old girl, but the defendent was found not guilty of that charge. The other guys that had sex with that girl all pleaded guilty to lesser charges. I'm not saying the kid deserves 10 years, but he is certainly no saint like the media often tries to make you beleive. At 17 he was videotaped drinking, smoking weed, getting a bj from a 15 year old, and having sex with a 17 year old after several other guys had sex with her.

Did I say they wouldn't? I said doing those things would mean your were not a saint. Quit trying to make me sound like a racist.

it wasn't the girl's parents that prosecuted her... it was the state.

whats the big deal? you don't like that two people had sex with the same girl in a short period of time - happens all the time and is not illegal.

look closer, drinking, smoking weed at that age are illegal, but definitely not worth any jail time

getting a bj from a 15 year old is horrible, if you are much older yourself, however, he was 17. the way the law was written, if they both had been a year older, it would not have been illegal.

so whats your complaint with this kid? he admits there are some issues morally with what he did...but jail time? no

Its ridiculous this kid did any jail time. Community service? fine, but JAIL time, come on. It was consentual, thats makes a big difference.

The media tries to make him out to be a saint and makes him out to be a much better football player than he actually was. So I guess I have no complaints with the kid, just the media.

Red herrings for the win!

It doesn't matter if he raped and ate small puppies, the fact that he received consentual oral sex from a girl two years younger than him does not justify a TEN YEAR jail sentence.

He's saying that the media is making him out to be a saint which he "clearly isn't." The point he is missing is that his prior history has no bearing on the case.

Eventhough the kid got screwed over, he is not the sympathetic figuere the media attempted to make him. I guess thats not too relevant, but it really pisses me off that this guy gets so much more media attention than the large number of individuals that get released from prison sometimes decades after being wrongly convicted of murder. This just goes to show you how people in this country (myself included) seem to worship athletes. Had this kid not been a star football player at the high school level, the media would have never jumped all over this story.

aaaaaaaaand you're completely wrong. a football star? he's in HIGH SCHOOL for god's sake. trust me, no one outside of the county he's from has ever heard of him because of his football skills. the kid being a football player isn't why this got so much attention.

all the attention maybe, JUST MAYBE, had something to do with how heinous the punishment was for his "crime"

It's the reason why he is a household name to people that follow sports as closely as I do. He's been featured on HBO's Real Sports with Bryant Gumble, Mark Cuban's (Dallas Mavericks Owner) Blog, Sportscenter, Dan Patrick's Radio show, and ESPN's outside the lines just off the top of my head.

no

the reason he is a household name is because he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for engaging in a consensual blow job. that's it. seriously. its because of the blow job. not because he played football

yes, it is true because he played football he received attention from media outlets a non-sports player wouldn't have. but, so what? that's good. the more people who hear about it, the better, because the whole ordeal is so outrageous.

Had he not played football he would not have been featured on the long list of shows I just mentioned. Had, he not been featured on those shows, I would have no idea who this kid is. Playing football was at least a contributing factor to some people knowing who Genarlow Wilson is, even if you are not willing to recognize it yourself.

you're right about those venues, but this did get plenty of press in non-sports media. I read about it in the NY times via Digg several months ago.

there is a big difference in

a story being big because it's a football player

and

a story being big that involves a football player

he is not going to be released until the appeal is decided(cnn) He should accept the deal, no record, not registering as a sex offender, he probably could be out in no time....does he really want to stay in prison until the appeal is heard?

If this guy signed up to play UNC basketball and unsportsmanly scored just as the game was ending after we were already beat in the ACC finals... you all would be calling for MORE jail time.
