Ridiculous new imaging technology, you can test out a beta of this type of software on this site:

Yeah, I'm just wondering how it all works. I can explain away the text, but the images, unless they're on some ridiculous supercomputer with like 500gb of RAM, I have no idea how they render that fast. 6/12/2007 1:38:50 AM |

ha ha, i'm waiting for games to adopt it somehow and render asstons of real world environments to frag bitches in from just a collection of photos

You can run it on your own computer.
It works by having multiple "index" images of the same thing, reading the appropriate image for the same resolution.
When they're scrolling around the city from the flickr photos, that's the same thing as when they're browsing the thumbnails... but for the thumbnails, they are using multiple versions of the same image, rather that different pictures of the same thing.
They need to take this a step further though, and come up with a useful interface/application for the algorithm. 6/12/2007 2:08:30 AM |

That's really incredible. I've been waiting to see something like this where multiple 2D images map together to make a 3D model. However they've done it, they really did a good job. 6/12/2007 9:18:54 AM |

what a horrible horrible thread title... that aside, pretty sweet technology, they should combine this with the multi-touch input stuff they have with surface
actually isn't this a lot like Google Street View in the sense that it can take multiple images and compose them in a manner to simulate 3d? (after looking at the tech preview)

not really
this processes all the images to find similarities in their content to link them together - they use an algorithm to determine how and where the images relate to each other
streetview just uses a special camera that they then sew the images of together - they already know where the images are in relation to each other

How long before they use this technology and data from a place like London were there is a CCTV camera every 50 feet to reconstruct people's entire lives? 6/12/2007 12:49:54 PM |

I was looking into UNC's comp sci graduate program (I know, I know, flame away), and they were doing research similar to this, except with video instead of still images. It was pretty wild.
If you wait long enough will the thing actually fill in planes? I notice as I'm moving around it's constantly adding pixels. This is really cool. 6/12/2007 2:03:35 PM |

shit, that's mind blowing right there. Do they select the photo's or does the algorithm is so smart that it can tell what the photo is, associate it, and then process it to be intertwined with other photos? 6/12/2007 6:11:57 PM |
