Check out Five Points while you're there. Great restaurants, awesome bars, and the bums really make you feel at home. It's like a huge Hillsborough St. 6/17/2007 4:26:53 PM |

I live in Columbia, and I like it. Parts of it remind me somewhat of Raleigh, but it's definitely not as as good of a city as Raleigh is. In regards to Dentaldamn's post, I'd say that racism is more on the surface here than in Raleigh. Seeing the confederate flag is a daily occurence, and it definitely feels more like "Old South".
With that said, there are actually numerous really good restaurants, a few great bars, and enough big-city ammenties without bad traffic. It's also very centrally located (2.5 hours from Asheville, 1.5 hours from Charleston, just over an hour to Charlotte, 3.5 hours to Raleigh, 3 hours to Atlanta, 2.5 hours to Savannah). You can't beat that. 6/17/2007 4:36:11 PM |

^AKA, it's just far enough from everything to prevent a casual trip to a better city 6/17/2007 5:23:37 PM |

I went to grad school in Columbia and am still working there now. Are you wanting to visit Columbia or move there? If you're visiting, 5 Points is fun, but more of the young college scene. The Vista (Gervais Street between the State House and the Gervais bridge) is really great for going out, but it's more of a young-professional scene (like Glenwood south-ish).
There is a great outdoors scene, if you like mountain biking Harbison State Forest is amazing. There's a new outdoor shopping area -Village at Sandhills - at Two Notch Road and Clemson Rd. It's like an outdoor mall with mostly chain stores and a few small stores. For boutique shopping there is great stuff off Devine St and in 5 Points.
Overall, I like Columbia a lot. The traffic is a breeze compared to Raleigh! 6/17/2007 5:26:14 PM |

^^ actually, I've taken quite a few "casual" trips. Just yesterday, I drove to Charleston from Columbia at noon and returned at 9:30, and I had a nice, full day. Granted it's not like being able to go from Raleigh to Durham and Chapel Hill, but what else is near Raleigh besides those? 6/17/2007 6:58:26 PM |
