Lets start with pitcher
I'd have to go with Charles "Old Hoss" Radbourn
http://baseball-almanac.com/players/player.php?p=radboch01
In 1884 with the Providence Grays he pitched a total of 678 2/3 innings with a W-L record of 59-12 and an ERA of 1.38 with 11 shutouts and a WHIP of less than 1
also:
Quote : | "'Tired out tossing a little five-ounce baseball for two hours?' Radbourn asked incredulously. 'I used to be a butcher. From 4 in the morning until 8 at night I knocked down steers with a 25-pound sledge. Tired from playing 2-hours a day for 10 times the money I used to get for 16 hours a day?'" |
Also my favorite hitter must be Hughie "Ee-Yah" Jennings
http://baseball-almanac.com/players/player.php?p=jennihu01
I swear to God all pitchers must've hated this guy...aside from being the all time record holder of most times being hit by a pitch, he was a tough bastard...check out what Ty Cobb had to say about him
Quote : | "There was nothing sedate about Hughie (Jennings). He once survived a running dive into a concrete swimming pool - after the pool had been unexpectedly drained" |
In 1892 he had 90 ERRORS and from 1896-1898 he was hit by at least 45 pitches each season]6/19/2007 1:25:31 PM |

Walter Johnson had FOUR three pitch innings. Since 1884, the three pitch inning has only occured 40 times.
He threw 531 complete games out of 666 starts. 6/19/2007 1:35:37 PM |

Jimmy Piersall hands down... he used to run around in the outfield flapping his arms, he once ran backwards around the bases after a home run. 6/19/2007 2:11:36 PM |

thats because in today's game if a pitcher throws 2 pitches and gets 2 outs in an inning the third batter is taking a pitch if he doesnt want to get an earfull from his manager6/19/2007 2:12:49 PM |

^yeah...and to break that record a pitcher would have to pitck back-to-back-to-BACK no-no's
here's another good one

al hrabosky wins this thread
Quote : | "During his time with the Cardinals, Hrabosky became a fan favorite for his antics on the mound. Between each pitch we would turn his back to the batter and walk towards second base, pouding his mitt and muttering to himself before storming back to the hill. Although the crowd would roar in delight, most batters were not fond of the pitcher's routine and during one such incident a brawl was initiated." |
turk wendell was pretty crazy
mark wohlers actually went crazy after leyritz hit that homer in the 96 world series
i wish there were videos of some of his outings on youtube -- it was pretty sad to watch

not old school but a cool stat
Kevin Kouzmanoff
On his very first major league at bat he came up with the bases loaded. He proceeded to swing at the first pitch and hit it out of the park for a grand slam.
Quote : | "The maximum numerically possible slugging average is 4.000, which has momentarily been achieved by several players who hit a home run on their first at-bat of the season. A few have achieved this on their first major league at-bat, giving them a momentary career slugging average of 4.000. Kevin Kouzmanoff, then playing for the Cleveland Indians, hit a grand slam off of Edinson Volquez on his first major-league pitch on September 2, 2006. He thus briefly achieved the best possible offensive percentage in every category, including some nonexistent categories such as "runs per pitch" (4.000)." |

I don't know if he's old but the craziest ballplayer, maybe alltime, is clearly Darren Daulton. 7/7/2007 7:54:58 PM |

Not really old school when it happened, but Robin Ventura
Jun 11 2000
Quote : | "Mets 3B Robin Ventura provided the most excitement after the game was called. Donning a Piazza jersey and a fake mustache made of eye-black, Ventura strode to the plate dragging his bat like the Mets All-Star catcher. He called time twice, swung and ran sliding head first into second base. He stood up, water dripping off him, and ran home, sliding head first and sending water spraying 12 feet in the air. Valentine, who was watching from the dugout with Piazza, Hampton and other Mets, signaled safe -- the Mets' only run of the night. "I've been taking notes for about a year and a half," Ventura said. "It was just sheer boredom. It was a long rain delay, a long weekend."" |
