seems pretty ridiculous to have a kid committed to college before he knows where he is going to high school. 6/20/2007 5:47:56 PM |

my opinion is, they're dumb for doing this, obviously
and this kid will turn out to be a huge disgrace academically during his time in high school

I disagree with both of you. Nothing is different compared to any other profile recruit. They know they are going to play ball in college from 8th grade on. 6/20/2007 5:58:48 PM |

yeah, but this kid is no longer being "recruited." he's already committed...before high school
i mean, sure, keep an eye on middle schoolers and freshman and whatnot.
but to already offer and get a commitment from a middle schooler ...that's dumb for both parties.

I think the same incentive is there, make the greats to get in to the college I'm going to go play basketball for. They have to do that either way. I'm not sure if there is a negative impact on this individual child....It is bad for schools and recruiting practice in general though.
I went to high school with marcus melvin. Had him in a few classes, but won't claim to know him very well. He signed here pretty damn early in his high school career. It may be what kept him IN high school. This may or may not be true, but he was certainly more motivated in the classroom afterwards. For the other kids I have seen get scholarships, the scholarships motivated them to do better in school most of the time.

As I recall Chris Leak committed to Wake Forest before he took a snap of High School football. Of course he reniged on that committment. Its not unheard of, but its highly suspect whats next elementary school, pre-school committments. 6/20/2007 6:42:45 PM |

yeah, given puberty hitting around 6th/7th grade now, schools pretty much have recruiting in place for freshman/sophomores now based on early talent.
Just look at Lebron and his high school games being televised since he was a sophomore.
and reggie bush had a buzz about him since freshman in high school
