I last ran linux like 4 years ago and first did like 8 years ago or so. I hear things are getting pretty slick and i wanna play w/ it again.

Any recommendations on what distro i should try?

You guys like KDE or GNOME better? I think the standard ubuntu uses GNOME. I might install it later with a dual boot, see how i like it.

Personally I'm not a huge fan of KDE, but some people are. There's Kubuntu if you want to try it.

You don't have to dual-boot, just download the LiveCD and boot from that ... it's all the benefit of actually installing, but without actually installing. And once you decide which you like, actually install it.

admittedly I've never tried it. but ive been using Red Hat since 7.1, ive tried Gentoo, Mandrake, SuSE, and a few others. all of them have their quirks. but Im pretty happy overall with Fedora Core. Admittedly, Ive probably become biased due to some emotional brand identification. dunno why.

but really it seems like the only real difference is what desktop manager and other extras you choose to use or not use.

why would someone want to choose Ubuntu over, say, Fedora Core 6 ?

I don't think I'm confident enough to use a linux distribution all the time.

If I ever want to play with it, I usually download the Ubuntu live install CD, which loads up a pretty complete (at least in terms of the interface) version of Ubuntu that you can play around with.

i am far from being any sort of linux guru.

but i have found that i can do damn near anything with a linux only system.

just run WINE for things that are windows-only.

it ultimately comes down to what you want to do with it....

i.e.
Slax KillBill - running windows apps on Linux (WINE, Qemu, etc.)
Devil - set up a firewall on an old, slow computer

Ubuntu
Gentoo
Fedora

These 3 are similar with different approaches to software packaging.

It's not really fair to compare distros based on "looks" as you can create any look through a variety of window and theme managers.

Ubuntu has become popular for several reasons:

The esae of install and configuration is the big one. Any average joe Windows user can install it on any machine will little effort. The apt repositories make adding software very easy as well.

They also go out of their way to make sure drivers are available for virtually anything that they can.

Free distribution is also nice, meaning you can order real cd's for free, not just downloads.

The multiple GUIs allows peopel to use what they are already semi-familiar with.

Lastly, Dell is now selling PCs with Ubuntu preinstalled, and HP is about to do the same thing. Michael Dell has been using Ubuntu on his personal laptop for about 18 months now. That gives it instant credibility.

i use ubuntu, i kinda messed around with gentoo and suse a little a few years ago

i'm quite pleased with ubuntu and plan to switch my partition from mostly windows with little linux(24-4gig), to mostly linux with moderately windows(20-8 gig maybe 18-10gig)

2nd for Slackware and you can try Slax as a live cd to take it for a test drive without installing.


If you wanna learn RHEL but don't want to pay for it then try CentOs.

ive been using ubuntu for a long time now, never had any issues. the beryl effects make vista look like crap.


also, dsl (damn small linux) is pretty cool, running a 50mb OS... but i couldnt get my wireless stuff to work right
