"Handbrake"

That's what I use when I put DVDs on my girlfriend's Ipod. I use the Mac version, but I haven't tried the version they ported to the PC.

I am using a PC, not Mac.
And yes, I know how to google but I'm just looking for opinions on what people here use and have found best.

I'm trying to use Handbrake to convert a 45 minute long dvd on my brand new macbook. It's been converting for 3 hours now and is still only half way done. ls this typical? There's got to be something faster right? I'll even pay for something if I have to.

^ depends on the settings you chose, but no, that doesn't seem too far out of the ordinary. encoding H.264 video is a very hard and processor intensive job. If you're doing it on a normal Macbook or Mac Mini or something, you'll just have to live with it. I usually let my encoding jobs run over night or while I'm at work (you can queue them up in Handbrake). If you want fast(er) encoding, then you'll have to pay the big bucks for a Mac Pro or something

That's what I was afraid of. Thanks though. I was looking into some of the software you can buy that claims to be superfast, but it's all for Windows systems. Haven't found much of anything for the Mac.

i would be skeptical of "super fast" software anyway. video encoding is one of the most processor intensive activities you have do on your computer. It just simply takes a long time. I doubt you'll find anything significantly faster for a similar windows computer (with similar processor, RAM, etc)

^ thanks for the help. I dug Handbrake out of the trash can and tried it again. I guess it just didn't like that particular DVD because its working about a million times better now. It's been finishing 2 hour dvd's in 45 minutes to an hour.
