So I get a call from my brother this morning and he tells me he is having issues with his computer. Basically he turns it on, it starts to boot up and then shuts off. It did it a couple times before and from what he is saying has gotten progressively worse. I am thinking faulty power supply but wanted to get some more thoughts on the subject.

Could be overheating, are all his fans and stuff running?

It could be a lot of things. How far in the boot process does it get?

Is he in a position to troubleshoot hardware? If not, he needs to take it to someone who can.

It could be a cooling issue, bad RAM, bad MB, bad PS (I doubt this, as it would most likely turn off right away or not turn on at all), etc...

these are questions i'll have to bring up after work. But i think it shuts down before the icon screen shows up.

It shut down when he turned it on after being off all night. could the comp over heat that quick to not even make it through startup?

Yes, if the cpu or chipset(if applicable) fan isn't running.
