Okay, my girlfriend is moving into the same apartment complex as I . She lives about ~100 yards away from me on the 3rd floor of another building (I am on the 3rd floor of my building). What is between us are brick walls, and another apartment or two (there is no line of sight). What I want to do is be able to have us share one broadband internet connection. She has a Linksys WRT54G and as do I. What are our options here (emphasis on value and economy).

I did a bit of searching and stumbled up a router by Buffalo with MIMO technology that extends the range 60-70%. Would this be sufficient given the circumstances?

look into the N routers.. I'm not sure on the exact range but they are supposed to give you more distance and speed than b and g

100 Yards and brick walls? Even wireless N might be pushing it. I think wireless-n is rated around 70 meters indoors (~76.5 yds). So you might have some luck with that, but who knows.

At my home I was able to string a wireless network about 200 yards, but I had line of sight between two D-Link wireless repeaters that I wrapped in plastic bags and put under the overhangs of two houses separated by farmland. They were able to maintain about 24 mbps each way, quite fancy. While it was raining heavily the repeaters would slow down to 2 mbps, but the connection never dropped packets while I was testing it.

I have some more of these repeaters just lying around in my closet, I will sell them to you for $20 a piece

Thanks everyone. I thought about using repeaters, but of course I 'd have to have somewhere to put them and a way to power them.

with no line of sight you are pretty much screwed. unless you can convince your neighbors to pop a repeater in their apartments for you.

I have a Linksys Wireless-G and I can pick up my mom's wireless from her house and mine as well at her house! They're both brick homes...Mine is like a little guest house and it's at least 100 ft away...

but that's only 33 yds though...

^ LOL. Buy the time I get all the necessary hardware, I'm thinking itll be a couple months worth of RR Lite (1.5Mbps) and by that time, I would have graduated and have a good job already. Thanks. I'm going to keep looking for a cheap solution though.

Get a Buffalo Router, then get a high gain antenna that will go up to 2 miles...

Total cost...roughly 300 bones.
