OK, blew up our beloved 86 bayliner last weekend, so I'm looking for a new one.

19-22 bowrider, I/O V-8, seats at least 8 prefferably 10, in the <$12k range, 1998-2005

So far it looks like the Bayliner Capri 1998-2000 2050, and the 2001-2005 205, is about the only thing that fits the criteria, I haven't found a Sea-Ray, Maxum, Four Winns, or Chapparel that offers a V-8 in that size boat with the average retail in a low enough range.

Here are a few prospects I'm checking out this week.

I am going to look at the one in durham in a few hours, if it is in great
condition, I'll see if he'll take $9,500 for it with trailer ( average
retail):

I found a few more locally:

http://raleigh.craigslist.org/boa/337681033.html

^ A little over the price range but it's such a good deal it's worth
considering. The average retail is $17,500, so at $13,000 either he needs
the money badly, he has no idea what his boat is worth, or something is
wrong with it, which isn't likey for a 2 year old boat. Either way I am
going to check this one out this week also.

^ This one is also a good deal, with the average retail at $11,480, but
it's hard to tell its condition from the pictures, I may look at this one
also after I see how the other two go.

have you been in a 4.3 boat with a good hull? they're not bad at all... not much difference to a v8. i've got a friend with a 21ft. chapparel cuddy cabin with a 4.3/penta and it'll run 43-45 all day with a full load. 2-3mph more with a moderate/light load. powers up anything you hook to it.

i know you had good service from this one, but overall bayliner makes a pretty cheap boat. imo, you can find something alot better quality for the money.

just curious, but why do you think bayliners aren't that good? And what would you recommend? What are the good drive systems in your opinion?

i mean, they're not terrible they've just never been known for their quality, especially older ones. they are at a much lower price point though, so it just depends on what you want. you do get alot of boat for the money, but they aren't known for holding up very long. mainly it's just quality control stuff like interior pieces, etc. some of them had issues with hull cracking easy, transoms cracking, gelcoat peeling, etc.

the force outboards that so many used aren't the most reliable, and parts aren't as readily available as they are for omc stuff.

anything that was made by omc before they broke up is going to be a pretty quality boat. there are tons of different brands that fell under that name. all of the other brands keith listed above (sea ray, chap., etc.) are all very nice boats.

your two most commonly found drives are going to be mercruiser and volvo-penta. both are good units. most inboard engines are solid, being age old ford/gm derived models. as for outboards, your johnson, evinrude, honda, are all good. the newer yamahas are pretty nice too.

boat manufacturing has come a long way in the past decade or two. most of the bad stuff has fallen away, and the decent stuff remains. you can mostly thank omc for that due to their near monopoly on the market for years. everything as far as engines and drives has become pretty standardized across different brands also. it's pretty hard to find a really bad boat of any brand these days imo.

Some of my dad's customers who owned Bayliners had trouble with their gelcoat. He also saw a bad Scarab. All of those other boats are solid.

I think they just need it gone, like asap. I've seen several boats listed for a month or so for $$$, then they drop the price weekly, then eventually just give it away.

Come get it.

I've got a '93 Chapparel 2000SLC (21 ft) with about 100 hours on it....
Runs like a dream, but I don't live on the lake anymore, so it rarely gets taken out.

Make me

Send it to Fl, it'll get used a plenty. Most likely destroyed, but definitely used.

yeah I used to run my old bayliner at the coast, but it sucked at everything except for cruising around and kneeboarding

^^as long as the motor was flushed after each use its not that bad....hell our boat spends 2 weeks a year in salt water without a closed cooling system and you cant tell its been in saltwater...

saltwater plus non stainless headgaskets = engine failure, seen it too many times, i dont know why anyone would run an open cooling system in saltwater
