I'm wondering if there are any realistic shooter games similar to Delta Force, where camouflage and huge ranges are actual parts of sniping, rather than close range Halo shit.

i loved joint operations: typhoon rising (made by the delta force people) when it first came out, but then they really fucked up the sniping with the updates

I'm assuming you've already played the Hitman series and the previously mentioned Thief games.

One of the finest niche military simulators on the market.

If you've ever played operation flashpoint, you've played the same game.

Armed Assault is just a very good upgrade to the game, with a new story line and modern units. It really really makes the game more fun.

I fuckin loved Operation Flashpoint, still play it on occasion, but the ArmA demo didn't run too well on my computer and i'm not gonna upgrade for a year or two probably. And I also 'love sneak/skill games,' have played all the Hitman games, Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, Battlefield 2, those are my kinds of games.

And for some reason WWII submarine sims are pretty sweet too, like the original Silent Hunter and Silent Hunter III and IV which are absolutely amazing looking and playing. But those are definitely niche games only for patient and intelligent gamers, but the rewards of sinking a merchant and watching it burn and split in two and sink on the open ocean at night after stalking/sneaking for hours is great. Also fun when you're looking for trouble is to try to sneak into an enemy port and get by the patrolling warships to drop all the ships in the dock, then when the warships come steaming in empty the rest of your torpedos pray they hit and then fucking disappear and run stealth and evasion submerged for a few hours......

if you loved Silent Hunter, check out the offering they have on Steam

for $30 you get:
688(i) Hunter-Killer
Dangerous Waters
Fleet Command
Sub command

I can only vow for Fleet Command. That was the closest I've ever been in a game to sitting back in the CIC on a Destroyer. It uses all the proper data (well, at least the declassified versions of ranges and such). I had tons of fun with it. Definitely a patience and strategic game. Of course, Civ IV is a great patience and strategy game to some degree.

Yeah I already have Sub Command, it's pretty cool but the technology is so crazy and takes a lot of 'training' before you can really even hit the waters. I like the WWII era subsims better because the subs are a bit less complex and difficult to control and the action is more thrilling because you really have to jump into the fray to sink ships vs sitting miles away and just launching torps/cruise missiles. A lot of Sub Command missions I played were mainly patrol here, surveil this ship, basically sit on your hands for a few hours. The WWII ones you still need patience, strategy, and skill but it is more exciting with more dramatic confrontations due to the limitations of the ships back then technologically and physically.

Plus you gotta love Silent Hunter III/IV's totally dynamic patrols, where you always start in port and end in port, you have free range of much of the ocean and your encounters are different every time you go out...
