Field of Dreams isn't really a baseball movie, it just happens to use baseball as its gateway between the father/son story the the psychology of America. Moonlight Graham wanting one single AB could just as easily be him wanting a single snap or a shift in the NFL or NHL.

Or maybe not, I dunno.

Anyway, I have not a single problem with A League of Their Own. It's a great movie. Even the predictable-as-shit frame story is made better by quality casting of the peripheral characters' older counterparts.

The fact that Moonlight Graham was a real guy who had one appearance in a game and didn't make it to bat kind of changes that.

And no, I don't think the same movie would work with a different sport. Baseball was tied up in the American psyche long, long before football, basketball, and hockey entered it.

Fair enough. Still, that's just bent on the fact that we're talking about a specific. If we were talking about Travis Roy (who was paralyzed eleven seconds into his first shift at Boston University), it'd have to be a hockey movie, but the situatuion is applicable to any sport.

The point is that it doesn't even have to be a sports movie. It's a movie about family and America that just happens to use baseball as a jumping off point.
