i cant believe no one told me they were on it, i guess i never asked. but ive seen a few sites similar and assumed no one was on. no idea how i missed the boat, my e-friends must hate me

im new there and it is great to have so much cool and somewhat rare music

a) at such great quality on the live (soundboard?) stuff // and the encoding in general, really
b) the ratio requirement ensures i get everthing i want in no time, even of stuff without many seeders. cause there are actually seeders!!!1

problem

after i had 1 CD, i left it to seed hoping to get a little ratio buffer to play with. only uploaded 2mb so i have downloaded about 5 or 6 things now, and have only contributed 5mb back. it looked like the ratio enforcers wont come after me for a while, but i still want a buffer to play with so i can actually start downloading more stuff that i really doubt people will want

questions

1--do i need to do anything to reseed the stuff now that the domain has changed? or is the tracker smart enough to know whats up? never got too into reading about torrents before the FAQs (i also have made the changes to the hosts file but im not sure how the actual torrent works liek i said)

2--whats hot now? what should i download and reseed that people will actually want? i know the ratio will eventually be a non-issue, but when it sits at 1% for 2 days then i worry slightly

You're right, the Ratio enforcers won't come after you until you get 5 GB downloaded, just make sure you seed as much as possible on each of your downloads. And yeah, it wouldn't hurt to download something popular so your ratio might get better when you seed (one of the first albums I downloaded was a Pelle Carlberg album that's only been snatched 17 times, so nobody really wants it and I therefore didn't get much seeding off of it).

1. If you put those IPs in your host file (see page 1), you don't have to reseed from the new site because the IP hosts are listed in there regardless. I reseeded on .cd to make sure it works, anyhow.

2. Go under browse, then click on the down arrow next to the "upped by" title: that way, the list is sorted by the most number of users trying to download a file. You can also sort by # of snatches by using the +. Those two let you see some of the most popular things on the site either at the moment (current downloads) or ever (snatches). I look at my snatches and see what people are downloading most that day (for example, that new Smashing Pumpkins album and the last Peter Bjorn & John album)

OH, AND MAKE SURE YOU ARE CLEVER - you can see all about that and port forwarding stuff in the forums/FAQs.

the easiest way to keep your ratio up is just make sure you leave everything you download open for a long long time. forever if possible.

I been on the site for a couple months, and I'm still seeding every single thing I've ever downloaded from there.

gotcha SF, i made the host changes when DC sent me the invite, so i could read all the FAQs

i sorted by leechers like you said, and i actually want that new pumpkins album so i'll try that and a couple other on that list that may interest me. the last thing i want is to have a group of CDs in my rotation that i dont like.

this policing of file ratios reminds me of the old BBS days; although as a sysop of a big board i usually had noratio everywhere in 919!!1 (so l33t). its also sad that ratio is the only way to ensure that the system works... i remember when people would pay for CDs full of shareware just to be able to offer more to get new stuff uploaded, or to encourage donations. on the bbs tangent, it was more expensive to run a bbs in the early 90s than it is to run a pretty big site today... but you see more sites asking for donations than ever before. blah blah

i will read more about being CLEVER, i read every FAQ it offered up at any point within other FAQs (i had 12 pages open like i was on wikipedia), but i dont remember this part.

i'm still not sure if i've got it working under the new oink.cd tracker. i've done everything short of redownloading, but no one has leeched from me yet. i'm guessing if you redownload, it'll just be like "hey, you've already got this. here's your torrent file that works." at least, i hope so.

I hate to say it, but i think this ratio enforcing thing encourages less downloading. people are not as willing to "spend" their download allowance on things they don't absolutely want/need. so what you have is a bunch of seeders (a few different seeds per person) and very few downloaders at any given time...so it's great when you find something you want because you get gangbanged by seeders with the file (so that they may increase their ratio). but on the other hand, 90% of the time people are sitting around just seeding, so they can "afford" to download something big or try new stuff, etc.

classic supply/demand

Eh, if you're on a fast internet connection, you can leave your torrent program open at all times and never notice that it's eating your bandwidth. Just dl some stuff and leave it open, eventually people will dl what you have, and your ratio goes up. Also, the more you upload, the less each dl'd cd matters. For example, with my ratio at 2.something and over 120gigs seeded, dl'ing even a fairly large amount doesn't really affect it much. And I literally never think about whether or not I can 'afford' to dl something. So basically, your theory doesn't hold once ratios and amount uploaded get fairly high.

Also, uploading a new torrent is probably the best way to get your ratio up, especially if the torrent is on the request list. Just make sure you follow the rules/guides for uploading.

i went through and changed all my tracker listings to the oink.cd address as opposed to the ip (that i guess was probablly mapped through my hosts file) and now ive actually started to upload a little.

i even did the clever section, but its still really slow, like i'm pulling 800k down and only putting 2k up, i've forwarded everything i can think of, so i'm gonna try to see if putting my server in the DMZ for an hour or 2 will change anything. if that works, then i guess i'm gonna have to find more ports that need to be forwarded.

Ratio: 0.052 Uploaded: 49.70 MB Downloaded: 953.06 MB

ive got it working well in the DMZ, and i'm about to put it back inside and see what happens. but all of my 8 uploads have shared at least some. i am happy with the results and unless this changes when i pull back then i think i am fine with ratio. and now i see why you get 14 days / 10gb or whatever

quick question, whats the best/difference between

v0/vbr/320/192

192 is just normal cd quality right? thats what im used to dealing with. like if you had a choice between all 4, you pick what>?

V0 and VBR are variable bit rate, they cut out frequencies not used. They're good quality with smaller files. A cd is 320, and 192 is the minimum for 'decent' that oink accepts. V0 is my favorite.

uTorrent. and V0 is my favorite, the only time I go 320 or FLAC is if I REALLY want the album and that's all that's available or it's an album that I know I'll get really stoned and listen to very loudly on my massive speakers. Otherwise it's V0/VBR/192 alltheway

What's one con that isn't reversible if you buy a new car that turns out to me a lemon?

Just about everything in life is reversible to some degree, but that doesn't mean some thought prior to making a decision makes you a shilly-shally milquetoast

turned on the uploadmaster 3000 before i left a while ago, it asked me to upgrade when i turned on utorrent.... assumedly wouldnt ask me to do so if it werent a stable/nonbeta release. so i did

had this email when i got home. im assuming it was generated in the 3 minutes i didnt have the new client (based on time)

the link they sent to in the forums was the same one i went to when i first started. i'm on the correct version ("versions 1.4 - 1.6.1 and 1.7.1 only" -- now 1.7.1/3360 specifically)

just dont wanna get in trouble
