My friends comptuter will not turn on at all. When you press the power button, it just starts making a beeping noise every 5 seconds or so. I opened it up and made sure the RAM and everything else was connected good, and that didn't work either. I can't even get to a point to reinstall windows. Nothing boots and nothing ever comes on the monitor. All it does is beep. What if anything can I do to get this working again?

or google the motherboard model # or BIOS maker to figure out what the beeps mean. for example google for "ASUS 76E Beep" or "Phoenix 8.2 Beep" to find the beep codes (if that was your mobo or bios info)

i think i had something like that happen to me before, dont remember if it waas evary 5 seconds, but it ended up being one of the dimm slots had gone bad

There are manuals for the mobo online. You'll just need to figure out what kind it is, or at the very least, what kind of BIOS is in it. Then you can look up the beep codes for that BIOS.

Besides that nearly everything has a pdf manual online somewhere so I hope you don't expect all of us to jump to fix such a vague problem when you haven't been able to provide much information of any use. Just take it to geek squad and pay out the ass if you don't feel competent enough to do a simple task.

I'm not dense, and I could follow simple instructions, and I did. However, the specific beep sequence was not listed on the mfg website. I don't see anywhere that I posted that I did not know how, or undertand how to look at the motherboard. Thanks for the info though on how to find the problem, even though I couldn't find the exact beep code

unplug all peripherals from the computer and any unnecessary device so you are left with:

1) power supply plugged into the wall and plugged into the motherboard
2) memory installed into the motherboard
3) hard drive plugged into the power supply and motherboard (primary drive only)
4) processor should be properly installed on the motherboard along with heatsink and fan
5) video card should be installed (unless the motherboard has onboard video, then use the onboard video)
5) make sure all cpu/system fans are plugged in
6) connect keyboard & mouse to computer
7) connect monitor to computer
8) start the computer


if you still get beeps, chances are you have a problem with a component on the motherboard and you'll need to RMA it for a new one or you'll have to buy a new motherboard.

all signs point to the problem being motherboard related, but a FAR easier way than to do all this is like GraniteBalls said, take a close-up picture of the motherboard inside your PC (or find the model number) for us and then we can properly diagnose the problem

also most common BIOS's don't have a code for 1-beep every 5 seconds, can you be more specific? is it a short beep? a long beep? a low/high-pitched beep? is it exactly 5 seconds? all this is vital info.
