Whats the easiest way to do this that produces decent quality (MP3s already sound a little shitty enough as it is).

I have a modded XBOX (EvolutionX) near my stereo but don't want to have to turn on the XBOX every time I want to listen to music.

What other options are there? I don't mind spending <$100 if something is easy to use and sounds good.

well if you want not shitty sounding music you are going to need to use a lossless format or re-encode from the original cd with a higher bitrate mp3/wma/aac

if you have the cds you could get one of those crazy 200+1 cd players, but this will only give you good quality if you have the original cd, not one made from mp3s

you arent going to get hardware that will make mp3s sound better because the data that would make them sound better was lost when it was encoded

I'm not saying I want it to sound better than the MP3s that are playing...that'd be like saying I want a way to play Betamax tapes in HD.

All I'm saying is I don't want to make the audio quality any worse than it already is.

it did read like you wanted the quality to increase though the solution

the only way that it would get worse is if you use a regular audio cable and plug it into your computer and receiver

streaming from the computer to the xbox or anything like that over a network, you really shouldnt lose quality

i saw this transmitter receiver combo that was wireless at radio shack

i couldnt find it online but it was only about $40

dont know anything about the quality of the equipment

I have a Netgear MP101 that I use with Twonkyvision media server. Netgear doesn't make the MP101 anymore (their proprietary firmware and media server sucked bad), but I'm sure that you could find something comparable.

Buy used computer for like $50 on TWW or craiglist

Line out to RCA Y cable 4.99

Wireless Remote control from ebay

Use Windows file sharing to make MP3 files on upstairs computer accessible downstairs. Add upstairs MP3 folders to music library on downstairs computer.

Profit.

^thats basically what i have minus the remote. i have it going through my receiver and through my tv, so I just use the receivers remote for volume, and a wireless mouse/keyboard for choosing songs.

it works fine for my needs, and im pretty picky about sound quality.

oh, and i just use iTunes for my music sharing software.

Is that mono sound? Would I have to get a special soundcard to do stereo sound output?

Except you have a 3mm plug and not a phono jack...

the thickness of the cable matters, I'm not saying go buy hte monster 400 series, but you will see a difference between the $4 cable and the $12-20 cable (but after that its negligiable unless running >10ft)

and if ANYBODY says "cables don't make a difference" its a very low voltage with a limited current source... so it can't drive a lossy cable, and the crappy thin cables are lossy... you will loose low end fidelity with them... it depends on the person if they care or not about this...
