howdy all,

I am an MEAS student new to putty and wandering what configuration i have wrongly put up, because when i enter this:
pams% add nawips
pams% ntl
Error: Can't open display:


is there something in the confirguration that is wrong? because i can do normal computing stuff with my Meas software just I cant get any new window displays.

That message means you need an x-window server running. (NCSU has a site license for X-Win32.)

If you're trying to do this remotely (which is what it sounds like), you won't be able to access any live data unless you have some kind of special access permissions. It's restricted to certain select users and the 6th floor computer lab in Jordan, IIRC.

I already have X-win32, and I have the Gempak loaded onto my user using the pams beowulf nodes and such. is there anything else?

In that first Putty settings window, on the left side, go to Connection->SSH->Tunnels and check the "Enable X11 forwarding" box, and enter "localhost:0" into the x display location box... then try to connect to the server. That should do it if x-win is configured right.

ok...so now it loads my the garp and ntl programs but doesn't have any data with them...is that apart of being in the 6th floor of jordan data set or is there anything else i can do?

I'm pretty sure you can only access the data from the 6th floor lab... although if you're on beowolf, you're probably doing this for research, so you might be able to convince the powers that be that you need to access the data. Not sure who you'd talk to in order to get access, though.
