I just got done with "Unforgiven" and someone explain why this is such a great movie. I've only seen about 2 or 3 other Westerns (pretty much despise the genre) but I decided to give this movie a chance since I always hear people recommend it. I have "Good, Bad, and Ugly" on my list but I really dread watching it.

i used to not really be into eastwood

but then i watched A Fistful Of Dollars after seeing Yojimbo

now i think his spaghetti stuff is great (especially when it's not on crap and croptacular AMC...viva la TCM)

and the music gets me all pumped up

The Great Silence is a good one.

Klaus Kinski + Morricone score + snow instead of desert = awesome

it is a little more depressing than most other westerns I've seen, but I liked it a lot

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is my favorite western ever, its such a great film.

You should watch Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns: Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, along with Once Upon a Time in the West.

Other great westerns are Peckinpah's Wild Bunch and Eastwood's High Plains Drifter

I thought the same thing about "unforgiven" it does not deserve 1/100th of the acclaim it gets

on the other hand i think its safe to say that most old westers are worth watching
"good bad & the ugly" is really good
alot of john wayne movies are really good too,

High Noon is fantastic. It stars Gary Cooper, Grace Kelly, Lon Chaney Jr (old black and white Wolfman), Lloyd Bridges (Jeff Bridges' father), and a young Lee Van Cleef (Angel Eyes from Good Bad and the Ugly)

I love all things Kurosawa and I remember spooky recommending The Proposition at one point so I'll check that out. High Noon is one of the Westerns I've actually seen (it was part of my goal to watch all of the imdb top 250 movies at one point) but I didn't care for it.

Wasn't Unforgiven supposed to be an anti-Western or Eastwood was wanting to end Western films with that film? Am I remembering that right.

I don't really like westerns either, but The Magnificent Seven is by far the best. DO NOT bother with the shitty sequels. Lynard Bernstein made that movie even though it had very quality acting.

the only westerns i really like are Sergio Leone westerns. i thought Unforgiven wasn't that great either.

also, check out Open Range. the gun fight scene at the end is worth the price of admission alone.

The obvious choices (Once Upon a Time in the West, the Leone/Unnamed man (Eastwood) trilogy) are all great, but I think my favorite western, and I'm not even sure if I would count it as a western, is Jeremiah Johnson starring Robert Redford. It's based on a true story. It's probably in my top 10 favorite movies of all time.

I think you mean 3:10 to Yuma. and the original is very good in itself.

I recommend many of you to watch Lonesome Dove. It is honestly one of the best miniseries of all time and is a great western.

People may hate kevin costner but Dances with Wolves (kinda western), Open Range, and Wyatt Earp are three very good movies. Wyatt Earp for the longest time was my favorite movie.

John Wayne movies are good, I really enjoy The Searchers. I have the Western channel with my encore package so I have had the opportunity to see some very good classic westerns and my grandfather was a huge western fan before he passed.

As far as recent westerns go:

I'll second The Proposition. It's pretty damn amazing.
The Quick and the Dead is worth watching if only for the novelty of seeing a western that was directed by Sam Raimi.
Seraphim Falls came out on dvd recently and stars Pierce Brosnan and Liam Neeson kicking the shit out of each other. Its not a perfect movie and once you get over the fact thats its two Irish guys starring in an American western its very entertaining. Has at least 3 "holy shit" scenes in it.

anyway, that's not the reason i had this thread bumped. I've gotten on a big Westerns kick lately. This time, more so with John Wayne's westerns. I think it began upon reading about the True Grit remake which got me interested and so i started pulling out some John Wayne movies. Let's get a good John Wayne discussion going, what's everyone's favorite Wayne western? I'd still say The Searchers for me. Will probably watch Angel and the Badman or Stagecoach tonight, some early Wayne.

The 3:10 to Yuma remake is one of the very few times where I will recommend the modern version over the original. I luuuuuuuurved the new one!

The Magnificent Seven is also a pillar of not just Westerns but cinema in general. And yes, it's just a remake of a Japanese movie about samurai. Don't ever ever ever ever never not in a bajillion years waste your time on the sequels though. Ever.

I think Unforgiven and Appaloosa are good for modern westerns. The Assassination of Jesse James is an amazing film.
