i was reading http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WKNC and it made me wonder: what do they currently use the antenna on the top of the library for? i think i remember seeing some directional antennas or something up there 7/11/2007 5:04:30 AM |

There are some micro-wave links up there, probably with UNC or Duke library. 7/11/2007 9:03:18 AM |

The transmitter for WKNC is still in the library just above the 9th floor. And one of the antennas is the WKNC transmitter antenna. But the directional antennas have to do with microwave links for MCNC. From what I've been told they can be used for Internet connectivity in case the main fiber backbone between NCSU and MCNC (or NCREN) was to fail. I am not 100% sure if that's what they are still used for or not, but I believe that was what they were originally used for. If someone here knows more about them please enlighten us. But I do have a picture that will better show the antenna.
The WKNC antenna consists of the four curly pieces of metal in the center of the side of the tower shown. The silver things on the sides are directors which direct the majority of the signal generally to the NNW.

yes it's still used that way, but not solely for failures. it just depends on what room ncsu is transmitting from.

wknc's 25,000 watts seriously pisses me off.
I can't get any stations below 96.1 from ANY portable radio anywhere near campus. and as much as i love wknc, sometimes i want to listen to fucking NPR 7/12/2007 9:03:02 AM |

damn i hadn't heard of that issue
one night when i was working there, some guy called up to tell me that knc was interfering with one of his television channels (antenna), and he was going to take legal action if we didn't stop. i said "ok" 7/12/2007 9:08:30 AM |
