Anyone care? The dude is like 32 and supposed to "revive" soccer. Wasn't Freddy Adu supposed to do the same thing 2 or 3 years ago. We will hear more about Beckham's social life than his play on the field.

I played soccer for six years when I was younger, but stopped once I got to middle school. I've never followed pro soccer or seen a railhawks game. I would like to understand more about the sport, especially since it is so big worldwide. I think him coming will be great so maybe soccer will get more exposure on ESPN or ABC or FOX or whatever. I'm hoping that I will start to get more into it.

The main problem with American soccer coverage today is that ESPN and ABC have recently decided to replace all of their knowledgeable soccer broadcasters with guys who know nothing about the sport (see: O'Brien, Dave). The Galaxy don't have the supporting cast to base their play around giving Beckham what he needs (a middle third with clear options to his inside), so there won't be instant results, so no one will care.

it could make soccer more popular until september when football starts. only because the only other options for sports are WNBA and baseball.

I think that it will have an impact, and it will provide the MLS with more attention and energy, but the MLS will never be what the EPL is. Only when soccer kids today grow up to be grandparents will there be a potential major interest in soccer.

I'm just ready to watch MLS games with sold out crowds, it makes the game 10 times better.

Don't get me wrong, I am a giant soccer fan and subscribe to digital cable in part because of FSN, but the MLS just doesn't compare to soccer outside of North America. Beckham coming is just a ploy to get more viewers for the MLS and to make it more "mainstream" since everyone knows who Beckham is. Unfortunately, American soccer won't catch on until we do well in a big tournament (ie: repeat what we did in Korea or even better).

I love watching almost all of the European leagues and I'll definitely watch Chelsea-Beckham but I just can't get in to MLS...

At least they have Tommy Smyth doing some of the MLS games but I don't get why Derek Rae doesn't... they are gold to listen to in the CL

^^ I don't watch soccer very often but I've watched enough to know that the World Cup is probably the most boring play I've seen.

Yeah and everyone got all excited, and everyone tried to watch his first game.

He was in for about a minute and didn't get anywhere near the ball.

America went back to not caring.

I will admit, the closer it gets to the 21st, the more I'm looking forward to it. I'll definitely watch his debut, but mostly because their playing fucking Chelsea, and I'm really watching it for Michael Ballack, who is the best motherfuckin' player in the world.

Oh, and..

He's not supposed to be big until he is actually old enough to play some World Cups. Right now he's destroying in the U-20 World Cup, but he's just playing in clubs and getting some real practice/training going on unlike most American players.

The Correct ordering is

NFL > College BB > NCSU FB > NBA = College FB > Tennis> Hockey > Random shit on ESPN like Poker, Bowling, Curling, Darts, Sport Fucking > MLB = Golf > Nascar >>>>> Soccer

No, it will never catch on. No matter how we do in any tournament, or who comes to play here. When will people stop trying to force soccer on us? If we wanted to play or like it, it would have happened by now.

Nobody is trying to force anything. Commish Don Garber in an online chat today -- "Our approach has always been to convince those people who love soccer to love MLS and let those who don't believe in the sport wallow in their own misfortune." If you don't like soccer, fine, don't watch it. And for the obligatory "but I have to put up with Beckham trash on ESPN all the time" comments, most soccer fans don't like it either. That's just how American media/ESPN is. They overhype every little thing whether it's steroids, BCS, Beckham, Pacman Jones, etc. MLS realizes there is already a fanbase of serious soccer fans in the US so they're trying to attract big name international players to reel some of that fanbase in and they just so happened to get one of the most popular in the world. Of course he isn't one of the best but he's one of the most recognized. It was never about winning over some random Joe Schmoe who hates soccer. It's about winning over some random soccer fan who follows the World Cup and the English Premier League.
