I just recently started drinking soymilk because one of my professors who does research on breast cancer says it minimizes breast cancer... And I tried it once and I loved it... I drink like a gallon a day
Well I noticed that my boobs are bigger...
I did a little research and yes indeed the phyto estrogens mimics the body's natural estrogen and causes the boobs to get bigger but I dunno if the source of information is credible or not...
Does anyone know anything about this? I wanna know what you guys think 7/11/2007 10:20:08 PM |

I know there is (was? this may be obsolete info) some concern about the effects of soy formula on babies. The article I read claimed that soy formula in normal amounts provided amounts of estrogen equivalent to birth control pills. My M-I-L says soymilk helps with hot flashes; and I've noticed the boob effect as well. You may be onto the next dietary supplement craze. 7/11/2007 10:52:46 PM |

The Dark Side of Soy By Mary Vance, Terrain. Posted July 9, 2007
Quote : | "After several years of consuming various forms of soy nearly every day, something wasn't right. I felt reasonably fit, but somewhere along the line I'd stopped menstruating. I couldn't figure out why my stomach became so upset after eating edamame or why I was often moody and bloated. It didn't occur to me at the time to blame soy, heart-protector and miracle food.
When I began studying holistic health and nutrition, I kept running across risks associated with eating soy. Endocrine disruption? Check. Digestive problems? Check. I researched soy's deleterious effects on thyroid, fertility, hormones, sex drive, digestion, and even its potential to contribute to certain cancers. For every study that proved there was a connection between soy and reduced disease risk, others cropped up to challenge these claims. What was going on?" |
Quote : | "Epidemiological studies have shown that Asians, particularly in Japan and China, have a much lower incidence of breast and prostate cancer than in the US, and many of these studies trace the results back to a traditional diet that includes soy. Daniel says a common misconception is that Asians are consuming more soy than they actually are; soy accounts for only about 15 percent of their total calories, or nine grams per day. Asian diets include small amounts of primarily fermented soy products, such as miso, natto, and tempeh, and some tofu. By contrast, in the US, processed soy food snacks or shakes can contain over 20 grams of soy protein in one serving." |

Watch out with that shit, Squirt. And I quit drinking soy milk years ago after I heard about this:
Tofu Shrinks Brain!
Quote : | "In a major ongoing study involving 3,734 elderly Japanese-American men, those who ate the most tofu during midlife had up to 2.4 times the risk of later developing Alzheimer’s disease. As part of the three-decade long Honolulu-Asia Aging Study, 27 foods and drinks were correlated with participants’ health. Men who consumed tofu at least twice weekly had more cognitive impairment than those who rarely or never ate the soybean curd.1, 2
'The test results were about equivalent to what they would have been if they were five years older,' said lead researcher Dr. Lon R. White from the Hawaii Center for Health Research. For the guys who ate no tofu, however, they tested as though they were five years younger.
What’s more, higher midlife tofu consumption was also associated with low brain weight. Brain atrophy was assessed in 574 men using MRI results and in 290 men using autopsy information. Shrinkage occurs naturally with age, but for the men who had consumed more tofu, White said 'their brains seemed to be showing an exaggeration of the usual patterns we see in aging.'" |

phytoestrogens can do some bad things to the body, obviously by acting as elevated levels of estrogen. even birth control is now low-dose estrogen due to increased risks for cancer.
phytoestrogens are found in almost everything we use... even clear soft water bottles (like your coke or dasani bottle). drinking out of "damaged" (aka, the bottle has been creased or crushed and you're still using it) bottles can expose you to a level of phytoestrogens that are suggested to cause reproductive malformations in unborn children. they're doing a lot of studies in rats at the moment...
being in the reproduction field, i've been hearing that phytoestrogens are becoming a HUGE focus for health organizations. data suggests that there is a difference in the impact on fetuses between asian and american mothers, and it seems to have to do with how long the mother is exposed, and at what doses, and this somehow impacts the fetus differently. (this isn't a racial or ethnic influence... it's their diets.)
i'm not saying to stop drinking it all together. and god knows you'll be exposed 20 other ways every day to phytoestrogens. but, like anything else, it should probably be done in moderation.

I <3 choc soymilk. In relation to that study on the Japanese-American elders in the U.S., obviously because of their traditions they're going to be more inclined than regular americans to eat tofu. To put that in respect to the larger scale, japan would be fuxored by now. I would hardly call them stupid these days. Wierd sex fetishes yes, more impaired from tofu no. 7/12/2007 3:20:10 AM |

even though soy milk does contain relatively high levels (but much, much less than the actual soy beans), most people don't drink enough for there to be any real concern--then again most people don't drink a gallon per day

For every study showing benefits of soy consumption, there is one showing harmful effects.
And so, experts are divided on this issue.

Something is not right about that statement. Since they go on to mention amount of soy protein in soy snacks in the US in the next sentence, I think they meant to say this:
soy accounts for only about 15 percent of their total PROTEIN calories, or nine grams per day.
Because otherwise (15% of TOTAL calories), it is just ludicrous.7/12/2007 6:04:44 AM |

if you have digestive problems - then legumes can be VERY harmful. like cow milk and such, humans are not meant to eat this food that has been cropped and harvested. By "meant", i mean that our bodies have not adapted and do not convert the essential requirements out of this food7/12/2007 10:57:23 AM |
