ok so i recently set up my new compy

took the hd from my old one, booted from it and got a bsod
used vista cd to repair, still got some hangups

so gave up on that and figured i'd just install fresh vista on new hd and not bother with old hd

new vista installs clean and is up an running perfect, machine responds fine etc

only problem is every time i start up i get prompted asking which windows im going to run, (the new one or the one on my old hd that gave me the bsod) even though that old hd is no longer connected


any tips?

find a configuration file named Boot (mine is under C: ), then you should be able to delete the line for the old hard drive

vista doesn't use boot.ini

open a command prompt and run the command "bcdedit"

This will give you a list of the current OSes installed in the boot manager. Figure out which one of them is the bad one and do "bcdedit /delete badone"

You can also google up some GUI based tools to do this if you're not comfortable with the command line.

If you fuck up too bad and delete the boot loader or delete the wrong entry, pop in your vista install disk and go to the repair tools. it can usually figure out what you fucked up and fix it automagically.

ty mucho, actually found it through another article, w/ vista and msconfig it has a basic editor under the boot tab, let me delete it right quick

system properties

theres something in there about startup options, i forgot exactly where it is (i'm on a map)

it basically edits the boot.ini file for you
