OK, so every so often i do a "most depressing songs" thread, this time i am going to try a different spin. on it. I want to hear yalls opinions for most passionate songs. And i mean passionate in a sense of raw emotion, like pain or anger, in terms of the singing or lyrics or both. a song where you can feel the pain and anger just from the voice and words and it hits you like a brick. i do NOt mean passionate in terms of love songs, i dont want love songs. just pure raw emotion through song (no love emotion). i havent made my list yet but i will shortly

What I don't understand is how someone singing someone else's lyrics can hold more legitimacy than the original song writer in terms of emotion. Please explain this to me.

I write a song about losing a girlfriend who died in car wreck

You listen to a song and can relate, because you had a wife for 40 years and in the last 10 lived a life of pain due to cancer.

Your experience was far more traumatic.

ie

Cash had more of a lifetime of experience and memories to back up the song than Reznor did

just because he didn't write it doesn't mean he can't have legitimate emotion while singing it.

Whether it was intentional or not, most people probably like Cash's deathly-voice (plus his whole musical history, rebel musician, failing health, etc.) along lyrics like "What have I become" and "everyone I know goes away in the end."

no i am looking for good music/songs that you can feel the passion in the words or singing

because the way cash sung that song, and knowing what was going on in his life gave the words more emotion than the true emo fag trent reznor ever could.

That is a powerful song, and not too hard to play on guitar either. You really can put a lot of emotion into it and it sounds good.

^ I know man... I still pull out that EP from time to time and listen to it, and it always brings back so many feelings associated with driving out in the country roads off 301 N. in rocky mount, windows open, smoking cigarettes... probably feeling like my life was way shittier than it actually was

I'm confused, you want powerful songs, but no love songs that happen to be powerful? You realize there are more songs related to love than just about anything else, right?

Nina Simone - Wild is the Wind
Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees
and a bunch of songs by The Magnetic Fields

Radiohead --- "Lucky"

Okkervil River--- "John Allyn Smith Sails" (if you know what he's singing about, it will explain the Sloop John B. references and why he sings it with such emotion---- read here to learn more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Berryman)

Blind Melon --- "Change"

Radiohead-- "Pearly"

Radiohead-- "Fake Plastic Trees"

Flaming Lips-- "Goin' On" (Wayne sounds in so much friggin' pain)

Arcade Fire --- "wake up"

Arcade Fire --- " Anti-christ television blues"

Arcade Fire --- "neighborhood #1 (tunnels)"

I could go on all day, but this is stuff that really stands out (the radiohead stuff) or just happens to have been stuff I think that fits and has hit my playlist today at work (the rest)

I agree with everyone else's response to this statement. Cash could relate to every lyric in this song. Trent Reznor almost didn't give the permission for him to use it, and after he watched Cash's music video he was blown away and said he doesn't even consider it his song anymore.
